My 12" rankin auger sucks!!!

My Leinbach will act the same way in really hard dry clay. It took me forever to drill 9 holes.
I would build up the tip with my welder and sharpen to give it more angle (bite) and then it worked better, but still slow.

In normal soil it works great.

I think this one from Tractor Supply I posted the link to above would help you both; It's a more aggressive tip than what came on that Northern Tool bit I bent (pictured above):

You keep saying BENT, are you meaning BOUGHT, or are you saying you got a NT Bit and BENT it to get more bite ??

also, i raced the tractor with a shovel and i won by about 20 minutes on a 18" deep hole

Our soil is not clay its just dirt its called Silt Loame, I think

I've never seen a tip like that - The angle of the tip's flanges look like they're angled for "fast drilling", or kinda like if it doesn't catch immediately, it ain't gonna catch. I don't know, I'm no expert, just going on my experience with the soil types we have here in FL.

I still suggest trying that $30 Tractor Supply tip. It just looks to me like it will grab immediately, & once it starts to grab it will stay grabbed. The TSC bit's shallower angled tip also looks like it would drill a little slower but more steadily ... rather than racing down thru the hole, assuming it catches, which yours apparently isn't.

well the 3 point hitch cant go all the way down until the hole starts to get deeper. if i grab the auger with my hand the with PTO off of course and pull it until its horizontal and lower the 3 point lever it will go all the way down until the auger is laying on the ground.

When you do, how far does the gear box on the auger move in relation to your rear wheels? I'm guessing quite a bit.
You could take the teeth off and it should dig better than that, I don't think that's your problem.

No, I initially bought a 6" dia bit from NT, which is pictured leaning in my barn, bent the bit's shaft on that immediately , aka ruined it, then drove over to local TSC & bought their 6" dia bit. Almost the same exact bit except for the more aggressive tip, which you can buy for $30.

To be clear, here is the Northern Tool 6" dia. bit whose shaft I immediately bent (ruined) by getting it jammed in amongst clay & roots; Couldn't get it out, rocked the tractor back-&-forth, & when I finally got it out I found the rocking had bent the shaft; I posted this pic just so you could see the shallow angle of the teeth on the bit:

Then, to replace the NT bit I bent/ ruined, I bought a replacement 6" dia. bit from local TSC. It turned out to have this more aggressive tip, which I didn't know it when I bought it, but it turned out to dig much better that the NT bit's tip:

also i went into my shop to modify my cutting teeth and 2 are stamped 40 deg and 2 are stamed 50 deg.

I was going to cut them with the plasma cutter and make them like arrow heads to see if that helps

EDIT: silt loam soil which we have is 40% sand 40% silt and 20% caly, this should not be hard to dig, there is no way a shovel should be faster than a 30k tractor that i just bought

I think I would try that $30 TSC bit, & maybe not bend any teeth yet.

I'll add: With the original 9" auger bit I used quite a lot, it had a tip on it that was less-aggressive than the $30 TSC bit, & there were many times where I ... & this is a do as I say not as I do comment ... would lay my weight on the auger to help the auger drill. With that TSC bit I haven't had to do that once ... To the contrary, I have to very slowly lower the 3PH or that tip is enough to grab & drill the auger into the ground where I can't get it out  Which if you're going to have a problem is the kind of problem I'd prefer: "It works, maybe too good" :)

I watched the video again, and the camera angle had me fooled a little. It doesn’t look nearly as bad as I initially thought. Have you tried what happens when you take those teeth off? They look useful for rocks, not so useful for dirt.

I may be way off here, but looking at the video, I don't see anybody at the controls of the 3ph. Have you tried holding down on the 3ph lever while it is trying to dig?
