Yes all castings flex, cast iron less so than cast steel, and gray less so than ductile, but flex they do.

Massey, in your picture with the overspray it appears the cast has rows of dimples in the cast where the bushings sit, there to make replacement of a close tolerance fit bushing less difficult?

That's the actual bronze bushings, which were fine except for needing a good cleaning and some new grease, so I left them in place. The dimples (in the bushings) are there to hold grease, but some people believe the dimples have no real lubrication value. The following link from a machinists forum has additional information about the subject.

Here's a copy of the picture you mentioned, only this time I zoomed in on the bushings to make them more clear.

OK, thanks for taking the time to take additional pictures, makes sense to me now.

Today, I'm taking time out to clean my garage, get properly organized, and tie up any loose ends such as taking stock of the tools/parts I've purchased v/s the tools/parts I still need to order. Restoring a tractor is a messy and somewhat chaotic process, so I find that doing this every so often helps me to keep track of everything.

Since my project will soon kick into high gear and things will start happening very quickly, I plan to minimize the possibility mistakes and/or delays caused by poor organization.

We've touched on this in the past I know but I couldn't agree more. It's frustrating to me to not have things where I need them.

Haven't really seen many shots of your shop or how you have the various components situated, other than in the background. No doubt you have experienced the "never seem to have as much room as I'd like" dilemna like most of us.

alright nitpicker.

This will be my last post to this thread or topic.

I meant it ( a casting ) wasn't like a piece of foam or a hyd hose bending all over the place. ANY material will exhibit some plastic deformity. the plastic deformity that a cast iron casting exhibits will be LESS than even bondo.. thus bondo dropping off a properly prepped casting due to flexing shouldn't be an issue.

anyway.. see ya'll later.

Wasn't trying to nitpick, thought it was just a discussion, wasn't trying to ruffle any feathers nor was I taking it that way.

Normally, I don't post pictures of the interior of my garage or workshop because I have tools and other things in there that I'd rather not be seen online. Nothing is stolen, it's only that I'd rather not present any temptation for thieves which might by some chance figure out who I am or where I live. Not to say that anyone on TBN is a thief, but it is a public forum so I take no chances.

However, I do have a floorplan I can show you.

The overall size of the building is 32' along the sides and 38' along the back/front wall, where the garage and other door are located. There is a three shelf open storage area (currently full of junk) about two feet deep along the back garage wall, a workbench with drawers and cabinets in the indentation between the garage and workshop, and the workshop is just one big room where I keep things like tool chests, table saws, a lathe, etc...

The garage door is 12' wide by 10' tall and there are two vertical 10" I beams in the middle of the building with 10" horizontal I beams going across the garage and workshop. The workshop has an 8' ceiling, but the garage has a 12' ceiling and the I beams are useful for lifting heavy loads. Overall, it's a somewhat large space with plenty of room, when I can manage to keep it organized.

I'm in the design hase of a garage for myself, have to put up a small barn first. I'll mill the lumber hopefully this Fall or next Spring. There are a lot of things I'm trying to incorporate without getting too ambitious but certainly I'll be looking at an overhead crane, they've gotten quite reasonable.

Personally, I wouldn't worry too much about having an overhead crane because after having had one for years, I've found a portable engine hoist to be much more versatile. Sure, the overhead crane can lift a lot more weight, but I've never found a need to lift any more weight than an engine hoist can handle.
