Rambler, My sides will be welded, steel panels that will add a lot of strength to the side rails.I have a 14 ft., commercially built dump trailer, and it is built similar to this one and works great. I know why you have concerns, but I think it will work as is. The hinge points will only have weight on them while dumping. This is only a small trailer, but I will keep an eye on the flex points, and add bracing if needed. Thanks for your comments, Greg

leveller- Can you give us a 'hint' on those welds in post #43? Rod used, Amperage, AC or DC Positive ground or Negative? Awesome craftsmanship! Great project! Kudos!!! ~Scotty

Scotty, my welder is a plain, old Miller 150 amp mig.(220 volt) It is really too small for welding something as thick as the cylinder bracket, but it does work. I had amps and wire speed maxed out, moved the gun ahead slowly while weaving back and forth a bit. I own a body shop and most of my welding is on sheet metal or steel thinner than 1/4 inch, so I like this size welder. It would be nice to have a bigger welder at times, but this one works for most things I do. Thanks for the compliments, Greg

leveller- Now I'm even more impressed, that those were done with mig! We've got a 175 Lincoln mig that my son is proficient with, but I can't seem to get the hang of! Guess I'll have to spend more time with it! Shield gas, amps, feed-rate, wire size, Great work! ~Scotty

You are totally right on rob and duplicate Hooked on HP. The cost of the cyl is the main part and the amount of steel is offset by the bracing you need on just a straight push system.
I know about pricey, this one set me back just a hair under 2g. It is a 14 and a half ton unit.
To build one wouldn't be that expensive at all. 4 lengths of tubing or channel, depending on the strength you need and 3 pins, and something to make the flanges where the rod end of the cyl connect to the top part of the scissors. To make the pivots, I have used pipe to put the pins through. Welding the pipe in for all the surfaces that the pins go through make for a plenty strong unit.

Here is a pick of it extended. Wish I had a better pick of it folded.

The main thing if you notice is that the distance from the center pivot to the ram pin is half the length of the extention of the cylinder. It is important to have a bend still in the scisssors when extended. If you will notice the pivot pin goes all the way across under the cyl rod when extended, and when closed the cyl is raised where the rod pin is for leverage on initial push.

This is an example of a home made dump trailer that I saw advertised for sale for about $1700. It is interesting in that it can end dump or side dump! I had never seen that before. I will include pics. It does use a telscoping ram. I do not think that the sides are all that strong, but it is interesting, nonetheless.

Yes it is. I like how they use 'trailer balls' to hold whichever side they want.

And it's JD green too!

I'ld love to see better pix of the dump hinge setup.
