My dump trailer build

Popular trailer in India. Looks like every local farmer had one. The last picture is trailer manufacturing shop. The axle, leaf springs and the wheels are used non driven truck axle. The guy made few of those per week.

Here is a picture of the pump that I use on my little dump trailer and other equipment, I purchased from the vendor listed earlier in this thread from ebay several yrs ago for about $250. It is a power up and down pump so I could use on my pull other equipment with 2-way cylinders. I just strap it to the rack of my atv or put in the bed of my truck very portable and use a truck battery to run it. The box is a little rough from being droped and beat up but has protected the pump. The portable part lets me use the dump trailer with any atv or move most equipment with the atv/pump
Would have got picture of the dump but its under snow and I would have had to move alot of equipment to get to it.

I am very proud of myself today! It has nothing to do with my trailer build, rather it is the fact that I got pics from my camera, to this post, without my son's help! Most of you will think that is not much of an accomplishment, but to me that is amazing that it worked!
As for my trailer, it is on it's own two wheels, hooked to my tractor, with the hydraulics hooked up and working. I took a few pics of my cylinder mounts and a pic of my axle. I used a rear axle out of a Cavalier, cut out the center section, and welded in a piece of tubing to get my correct width. The last pic is kind of off topic, but in case anybody has never used a flap disc, these are great for smoothing off welds, etc. You can get a much better finish than with a hard disc, although I still use a hard disc for initial grinding, and use the flap disc for finish work. Leveller, Looking good. The welds look profesional.you are going to have a fine looking trailer when you get it done.

The first two pics show my front, lower cylinder mount. I hope you can see how I braced it and tied it into the hitch. The last pic shows my axle, with extra gussets, welded to the frame. I opted to not put any suspension on the trailer because, I will not use it on the road, Without suspension I could keep the whole trailer lower to the ground, and I felt it would make trailer more stable while dumping, Greg

This is where I am at now. Trailer is on wheels, hitched to tractor, and lift is working. I ended up with the cylinder mounted at a 15 degree angle. The dump angle ended up at 48 degrees. My initial goal was at least 45 degree dump angle, so i am happy with the results. The final overall width is 3 inches wider than my tractor, 1 1/2 inches per side, so I guess I can live with that. Now I will final weld everything, and then on to building the box. Notice the aluminum wheels, as a bonus, they were on the Cavalier axle I used. The Cavalier was a parts car I had anyway, so axle and wheels were free! So far, the only thing I had to buy for this build, was a 20 ft. length of 2x2 angle iron, Greg

Very nice job. It looks great. I like how you routed and retained the hoses.

Sweet welds there Greg, what in the world do you need a flap disk on quality welds like that for? I'm jealous. OK so what's the trick to getting them to look like that?

Oh and eailer you asked if I like the orientation of my dump cylinder? Yes, so far so good. As you noticed the lift point is very much forward of center. I'm no mechanical engineer nor do I pretend to be, but I suppose the way I have the cylinder mounted there is more force / stress on the trailer end instead of the dump end? I suppose it really doesn't matter just so long at it works right?

Great progress

Thanks everyone for all the good comments. I am really enjoying building this trailer. It has been a while since I built something for myself and it is fun to not have to keep track of my hours or have a deadline as to when it has to be done. As for the question about my welds, Larry, it just takes practice and haveing your welder set up right. I am almost 50, and have been welding and building things since I was about 10 years old. I grew up on a farm, and my Dad always had a shop where I spent as much time as possible. With a good welder and some practice, anybody can make a good weld.

Looks nice. I can't weld worth a darn. Been following these dump trailer threads, cool stuff.

Your rear hinge joint seems based on an angle iron, and nothing is really supporting those pivots? Both the top trailer deck, and the bottom rails, don't have any cross support there - axle is the closest support on the rails.

Will that important pivot area need a little more support so it doesn't rack or flex on you? I suppose your floor will do some of that. But the trailer is held on 3 points, the cyl pivot and these 2 hinges, seems they will flex as they are.
