I did and did and kept doing! It's REALLY cleared up! I cannot believe that much crap was in there! Definitely explains the overheating. Oh well, now I have a water pump too haha! I guess I would not have figured this out without it though. What would cause all that crap? Just years of no maintenance and very low pressure circulating from no pump?

Also, what is the correct procedure to check my dipstick and where should it be on the stick checkered part when cold? Threads out, or all the way in? Half way up the x pattern or at the top? Etc? I'm going to add some Marvel Mystery Oil and don't want to overfill it. I have mine about half way up the x pattern just sitting on threads and not screwed in when cold.

The specified capacity for YM2000, and I think your 1700 is the same, is 5 quarts oil and that takes it to the top of the checkered area. Dipstick resting on opening, not screwed in. Apparently anywhere in the checkered area is acceptable under moderate load.

That said, I buy and use a 4 quart jug which brings it halfway up the checkered area. I wouldn't recommend this for an engine run hard in hot weather but 90% of my use on the YM240 is at 1400 rpm running the backhoe so its not working hard at all. The other 10% is loader work, also not stressing it. It doesn't use any oil in the 50 hour change intervals.

On the YM186D, a little tractor run hard at times at full throttle up the grades in my orchard, I fill to the top of the checkered area and verify it isn't using any oil.

The consensus reading in this forum: for reading a threaded dipstick, just set it on the threads. A dipstick sealed with a rubber bushing, push it in. But I don't know if this is documented anywhere in Yanmar's manuals. it just works.

Marvel Mystery Oil? Why??? That stuff just thins your oil, the same as pouring Diesel in your crankcase. Your tractor will last longer if you stay with Yanmar's lubrication recommendations. I've read it is good for breakin oil because it can penetrate tight spaces but these 30 year old tractors don't need that. It might just loosen and circulate crud that is better left alone. Don't. Likewise, you don't need to add STP (magic oil thickener) either.

Thermosyphons don't stir the crud in the block up thus it settles and remains there for eternity until someone adds a pump :D Next coolant change in mine and I'll hit her with the high pressure washer down the hose trick again....

Thanks for the dipstick feedback. For the MMO, I have also read numerous posts on this forum and others from people that swear by it for these older tractors. Honestly, many more good than bad. Not arguing with you as I am still learning, but a lot of people said that it recondition valve seals and things like that. Also that it is good to put in the fuel tank to clean the fuel system and injectors. I have always used stable or seafoam in the fuel tanks on my equipment. What are your thoughts on this?

Neat 1500, my thoughts exactly.

Tickled to hear it is clearing up. My first to see what happened here. I know you flushed until clean with a water hose so it is just pretty amazing to me that the water pump circulated enough water to break all that crud up.

Tube clear, no blow by!

Water pump installed and temp is LOW at around 170-180 after 20 min at any RPM!

Is it ok to run around 1800-2000 RPM now that I have a water pump?

Yep any RPM should be good as long as its not lugging sounding . 1500rpm doing light finish mowing or box blading is not lugging by the way.

But a diesel should not run hot just running at 1500 or 2000 rpm sitting in a drive, that's no load, I know it did it before but it had a finiky no waterpump cooling system. An hour running a bush hog at 2200 rpm is more the test you want to put to see if it stays cool.

Good news is it's not oil. But my driveway looks like I just washed a muddy four wheeler. I think I found out why it was overheating in the first place haha. ALL KINDS of crap coming out. Literally like freaking dirt! I keep flushing and then running it and then flushing. It's clearing up.

in Japan they used ditch water to fill these up and then drained them in the winter so they would not bust. Likely is lots of mud and fine rust that was in your block that the turbulence stirred up.

Your getting there man, I know this has all been frustrating, but you still have not put too much into it to feel bad, you have a solid tractor and I think you are getting to the bottom of this all. It could of been worse that's for sure.

This makes sense! It looked and smelled like ditch water! I hope rice doesn't start growing in my yard!
