Well today was a GREAT day! All fixed. Turned out it was simply be a loose ground wire. Once that was corrected, it fired like a champ! Thanks to everyone who chipped in and hung with me. I made a mountain out of a mole hill but it wasn't easy to find. Problem was in an upstream outlet box. Ran it most of the day and it cycled beautifully... I am once again a happy camper!

The best part although I burned some time... I learned a whole lot about gas heaters and how they work!

Now you can set back and enjoy a cool one! Glad it's working!

WOW..............:)
I did... sort of... never expected it to be a loose ground in a totally separate outlet on the same circuit. Live and learn. When I pulled the receptacle it looked good. One of the three ground wires in the wire nut looked to be inserted but when I pulled on it one of them was loose. Since all the outlets were giving me 110v I assumed it was good. The heater needs all three wires apparently.

Now you can set back and enjoy a cool one! Glad it's working!
Enjoying a libation or two as we speak!

I've been hesitant to check but couldn't wait any longer...

Glad to hear the good news.

Still working with lots of homes without grounds... some on service 100 years.

Yay! I was rooting for you. Way to stick with it.

Well that is really an odd one. As an electrician I have seen many heaters function on an ungrounded system. In the olden days... not too many years ago.... all gas systems were bonded to ground, as a precaution. This in a way provided the grounding to the furnace. Than this bonding went away as the grounding of furnace electrical wiring provided direct ground protection to the gas piping.

You would have thought that the gas piping strapped to the steel building would have also provided a grounding source, but apparently not.

I applauded your efforts to track this one down.

In today's computerized world "ground" becomes extremely critical. More critical than precise voltage.

In this particular case I would have struggled to find that problem. I would have had to question my skills at wiring the circuit to go back toward the power source checking each connection.

I'm very glad the problem was found by Mark rather than having to pay someone to point it out. That's usually how these things end with me..... But it's my Sons trying to play it down with "No big deal Dad, happens all the time"..... :D
