Kyle,
My wife and I send our condolences for your loss.
last year we rescued our special needs puppy Woody. I can remember how we felt during his heart surgery wondering if he was going to make it. Every night I wrap him up in a down comforter before I turn in (he can't handle the cold very well). I look in his eyes and kiss him because we know that due to his heart and several other serious problems he most likely will not live to be very old.
For many people like yourself our animals are family members not just pets. We don't have children (human ones that is). So for us loosing one of our dogs would be like loosing a child. It's going to happen some day and we are not going to take it well.
Take care
