Generally, 2x4s and other such dimensional lumber is classed as Demolition debris or Construction materials neither of which is supposed to be burned.

Every cloud has a silver lining. The delay in having his burn pile inspected will allow the OP to remove the lumber from the pile so as to be in compliance with the permit requirements.

Looks like he has a round table in there too, 1st pic.

The pile is large enough multiple generations of Keebler elves could be in there.

The fire dept could take one look at that pile and say break Mt. Vesuvius into smaller piles.

Looks like there might be some pressure treated lumber in there, too. If so, a visit from the EPA won't be fun.

I got a neighbor that burns his trash and it stinks to high heaven. Told him I see it again I'm calling the FD.

I posted the pics to actually SHOW the members here what the situation is...does anybody really think a huge burn is going to create any problems? Look at the buildings in the distance....part of the problem here is that I GET SUCH A LIMITED WINDOW TO BURN IN....MAYBE FOUR DAYS A YEAR AND TODAY WAS ONE OF THEM !!! If there is too much snow I cannot clear a path to the pile, if there is too little snow I don't have a means to put it out should situations require. IT HAS TO BE OUT BY DARK.....DUHHHHH !!!!! And the permits say NO WIND....I live on a hill and it's almost always windy as H*LL here....I studied and studied the weather forecasts for several days and TODAY would have been the perfect day to burn...and the morons could not take half an hour to come out and inspect my pile!!!! AND YOU KNOW WHAT???? Had I just lit it off this morning without ANY authorization it probably would have been fine....

SO WHY DO THEY PUT SO MANY STUPID RESTRICTIONS ON A BURN LIKE MINE??? MORONS !!!!! Try to follow the rules and accomodate things to be a good resident who pays 4 grand in property taxes a year and this is the kind of service you get? MORONS !!!!!!

How much of your 4k in taxes go to the fd? National recommendations for outside burning generally only wood in its natural state. You are not following that by the looks of it. Appeared to be wood paneling and a door. Your pile is grossly over piled by th requirements you were previosly aware of I hope. I agree it's silly to be told what you can burn in regards to size but you choose to live there. I've seen a small fire erupt and burn 17k acres. Granted probably not even a possibility for you but that kind of stuff prompts knee jerk reactions.

Michigan was the last Great Lake state to outlaw burn barrels for household trash. They have been getting pretty strict about what can and cannot be burned, as well as where, when and how.

I don't mind people burning wood, branches, etc... especially in a rural area.

The OPs issue is strictly "how to get a permit in a timely manner." Asking for an inspection and being upset that it isn't done within 24 hours from a volunteer department is not reasonable thinking. And the bad-mouthing of a volunteer fire department is not going to float well here on TBN, with so many members living in a rural location with similar services. These folks put themselves on the line for the public for free! We have volunteer services where I live. You don't think about them much, but when you're laying on the floor in the fetal position, blacked out, the first thing you see when you come to is a volunteer standing over you that is actually concerned about saving your life, despite you being a possible jerk. ;)

Lots of flying embers will come off that pile and go hundreds of feet with the lightest of wind - a pile that size will create it's own. Those green cedar trees and dead weeds in the background burn quite easily. Our VFD does not issue burn permits. The decision to burn is the owners and so is all the responsibility. If they give you a permit will they be standing by while you burn?

In about 10 years it will be a mulch pile anyway.

Pics if you burn.

Steve

Yeah!!! Pull the lumber out and light it up, no permit required.
