They don't inspect piles here. Have to apply for the permit on the day it will be used. They like fires started around dusk and out by midnight.

There seems to be quite a few differences in burning regulations across states.

In NC, I obtain burning permits online through the NC Forest Service and can apply for a permit that is good for up to one month. I can burn only between 8 am and 6 pm.

The OP's burn pile contains lumber -- that isn't allowed in NC.

Can the 5 x 5 x 3 be burned anytime of the year?
Eat an elephant one bite at time.

I've actually done that. I had a pile that got big and weather got wrong so I broke it down to smaller until I had a good day to light the whole thing.

Depending on storms or whatnot I burn off probably 10 of what you have a year. Common sense, personal responsibility and patience for the right winds / weather. Heck a slow steady rain is great weather to light off a big one in.

I DON'T have that opportunity....too many buildings plus neighboring houses up by the road so I end up moving all the brush to the back of the property (1000 feet from the road) and THEN they tell me I can only burn when the ground is covered with snow.....DUHHHHHH !!!!

It's not treated lumber....much the the pile is storm damaged CEDAR trees....isn't a majority of 2X lumber spruce, pine, or fir?????

It is my understanding that the permit regulations rule out the burning of any lumber in NC.

OP: I have an idea. I know, I know it sounds crazy, but on the next windy day, run down and file for a burning permit from your local DNR office.

Then after you receive the permit, you can plan your burn.

I know, I know: planning sounds crazy and all that and you certainly are the center star we all serve, but if you plan ahead it gives the rest of us the best opportunity to plan how we can best venerate you, the center of our universe and reason to draw breath.

Whoa, did I just say all that out loud?

How far in advance are you allowed to get the permit?

Here are the state regs on what can be burned:
http://www.michigan.gov/dnr/0 said:
Burn permits are issued only for:
Limbs
Brush
Stumps
Evergreen needles
Leaves
Grass
Ongoing burns for construction and land clearing, roadway maintenance, and uncertified party's performing prescribed burns without a written plan require a burn permit issued by the local DNR Fire Manager.

Burn permits are NOT required:
Cooking or recreational campfires
Anytime there is continuous snow cover adjacent to your fire
Household paper materials that does not contain plastic, rubber, foam, or textiles that is burned in a container constructed of metal or masonry, with a covering device having openings no larger than 3/4 of an inch

Items that can never be burned due to air quality regulations:
Demolition debris
Construction materials
Automotive parts
Household trash that contains plastic, rubber, foam, chemically treated wood, textiles, electronics, chemicals or hazardous materials
Generally, 2x4s and other such dimensional lumber is classed as Demolition debris or Construction materials neither of which is supposed to be burned.

In all seriousness, that pile looks way too big to be able to control with that tiny tractor.

Is there any regulation as to how many 5'X5'X3' piles can be burned at one time or how close together they can be? :D
