My new Barn/Shop

I don't know about Texas, but I have "heard" here in Michigan that if you get the barn inspected with concrete floors and electric your property taxes will increase significantly. I "hear" that people around here wait until the inspector does the final approval before running electric and adding the concrete floor. Saves BIG $$$ in the end.

Thankfully we have no inspection process for outbuildings here in Country East Texas..
Upon doing a flyover, the appraisers might or might not see the barn. If they do, then I might get hit with more improvement value to my property.. Guess I'll just have to wait and see.. LOL

Well this weekend we got all of the rest of the iron up.. My father in law is the one straddling the trusses... Not I.. You'll find me in or on the tractor bucket..

From what I've seen, most barns without a concrete floor are dry, dirty, and dusty messes. The dust gets kicked up everytime you walk across the floor and settles on everything. Anytime you touch something or rub up against it, you will be covered in dust. I don't think you will ever regret doing the slab first, but you might really regret not doing it.

I agree with this. My pole barn built about 6 years ago has only a concrete center and feed room (poured after the barn was up). All the other stalls both on the livestock side and open storage side are dirt floors. The dry dusty summers down here allows the dirt to get into everything. When we had show animals in the stalls they seemed to push dirt and manure out the cattle panel into the alley. Once a week we had to wash down to keep the area clean.

I am planning to have a pole building built to the same specifications as yours. I would also have to have a much steeper pitch on the roof (6 by 12) since we get 15 to 30 feet of snow for 4 months of the year, and a pretty good overhang to keep the falling snow from caving in the sides as it falls.

Steve, With all the snow you get I'm sure you'll agree the higher the pitch the better. Also I guess you might need to make sure you have room on all sides of the building just in case you need to get in there with the Kubota to blow any excess snow away from the building. And as mentioned on TBN before don't have the roof slope over the doors as any snow coming off of the roof will block the doors. I'm sure you already know this but just a thought.

I have talked to several builders now and they say the snow doesn't actually slide off because it so cold most of the winter, and this building will not be heated, but I am going to have a 24" overhang on all four sides. The main entrance will be on the end. I am finding that it will cost about $26,000 to have the building built, with me doing the electrical and excavating.
