Tractor
John Deere 420 garden tractor
Picked this one up for a good price off Craigslist. Yes I also got a mower deck, but its off the machine to go to the welder for some patching. I wanted the tractor for gardening work, plow days and shows. You do not see many of these restored and taken to shows, yet they are becoming an antique in thier own right. She runs well, almost 1900 hours on the clock. I am working on fabricating my own sleeve hitch for my moldboard plow to work on her. Mike

Someone took really good care of that one, Mike - it's in great looking condition.
Ours looks a little more "used", but only has 750 hours.
We sport a Cyclone Rake hitch - basically a heavy section of angle iron with some mounting holes.

I've got it all apart on the lawn, fixing the radiator, today. Former owner had a the fan spinning a tad too close to where the radiator is, so many of the fins are folded over. Opening it up and letting it breath should help bring the operating temps down a bit. Tedious work with a few chopsticks whittled down to reform the fins.

Thanks for the complements!! It belonged to a Jay County Sheriff's father. He got it for $800 a couple years ago, Now he lives with family and nolonger needed. I got it from his son for $600. I am very happy. New front tires are needed, one has a leak and both are going bald! I put my 23 8.50 12 Goodyear ag bar tires on the rear today. Then I cleaned up my mower deck up, has 2 small rust holes up top and some on the corner of the non chute side and along the front edge on that same left side. Its been patched before, with quite heavy steel, so once I get these fixed, I should be good. Gear box is quiet and full of lube, spindles are quiet and the blades are in decent shape, just needing a quick sharpening. I have a good plan in my head to put a rear sleeve hitch on. I have the lower mounts figured out, just waiting on a bracket to come in at work. Using the heavy plate steel mounts for a striping roller bar for a Cub Cadet Z-force Commercial model as the lower pivot points. The sleeve adapter is one for a Simplicity/Allis Chalmers garden tractor. I plan to remove the fender deck to degrease and clean in the next couple weeks, I am going to make an arm to come up from one side of the mower deck lifting rock shaft. From there a metal bar will travel rearward below the fuel tank and above the axle to another pivot point I am adding to the sleeve adapter. A shouldered bolt will allow movement. If it all works as it does in my mind, it will allow anybody to add the rear implement lift for the more common and cheaper sleeve hitch implements used on many garden tractors. Mike

You stole that tractor - from a sheriff's father, yet!
Please post some pictures of the hitch project as it progresses.

His son set the pricing, he noticed that all the ones listed for 1200-1500 localy were not selling, just sitting with the ads reposted over and over. They wanted it gone. I havent used it enough to discover any hidden issues other than 1 front tire that goes flat. Pulling the big roller at the local garden tractor pull tonight should put her thru her paces and vet out any issues. I will post plenty of pics as I progress on the hitch build. I found some more brackets I have saved over the years. one might give me my front rock shaft extension I need. Mike

no issues at all. Ran like a Kubota should. Another guy brought 2 older Case GT's and neither lasted more than an hour pulling the heavy roller before they started to loose power. I pulled it for almost 4 hours straight with no issues. Mike
