Commuting 120 miles a day, the gas on my 2003 GMC pickup is killing me. I have finally decided I need to get a car, but still need a work truck. I found this 1994 F250 4x4 deisel (7.3 Navistar - powerstroke) and it seems to fit the bill. No carpet, rollup windows, manual locks, and manual transmission. its pretty plain. But its pretty clean and seems to run good. Pulled my tractor with it yesterday and it is considerably more able than my half-ton gas pickup.

Only problem is that it seems to be idled a little high, maybe 850 rpms. The sticker on the engine says it should be 625. It is noticeable when you put it in reverse - it goes too fast!

I don't know the first thing about deisels, I haven't touched the one on my B2710 in the 7 years I've owned it, and I have never owned a vehicle with a diesel.

The seller says he replaced the injector pump and clutch just last week, had the fluids changed, coolant etc. Also looks like a new alternator on it, and pretty good tires. I can't detect any leaks at all, it seems to be mechanically sound. It has 133,000 miles on it which is not bad for a 12 year old truck. The last 5 months it has been sitting most of the time, not even registered, as they figured their teenage son would drive it but it turns out it was not "cool" for him so it has set. If it needed a clutch and injector pump it could be they didn't have the money to fix it, but did the work so they could sell it.

I paid $4500 which seemed to be OK for the above average condition the truck is in, and the relatively low miles. Insurance (liability only) on it as a 3rd vehicle is only $140 for 6 months.

Is the idle speed something I can set or should I take to somebody to look at?

I have a Dodge diesel and love it !! I will never go back to a gasser. i think you got a very good deal. With 133K on it, it is just getting broke in. Be sure to throw some additive to the fuel when you fill it up ( Power Service is a popular one ) It is hard to tell when the last time is that they used some additive. The idle speed is no big deal. Any decent diesel mechanic should be able to set it in about 5 minutes.
Just be ready to go look at new diesels in the near future, once you start running diesel through your veins you will be hooked....

$4500? Outstanding for a diesel! I was at a city auction a few months ago and had my eye on a 97 Chev 3500 dually w/67K diesel.....it went fo $8600:( ..... My limit was 7K. One of these days............

Way to much truck for you to use pulling your B2710 around.:) Keep it clean and do not let your BIL uses it. :p I will bring my car hauler down and take it off your hands this fall. It would work great hauling my B2910.:D

Another oil burner see's the light! :D

Make sure to get some coolant addative from Ford ASAP. These motors are pretty good, but they do suffer from cavitation erosion which causes pitts to form in the water jacket which will eventually cause a hydro-lock. :(

Sounds like a good deal and any deal that makes you happy is a good deal!:D

Inn '94 they built two different engines for these trucks.. The actual Power Stroke was a late build. If it truely has a Power Stroke, I'd have to think about it a bit, they useually dont have idle problems.. The earlier engine has an injector pump(as you mentioned).. If you can see an "octopus" of lines toward the front of the engine and leading to each injector, the pump timing could be off sinse they just replaced it.. Any diesel shop should be able to help.. I'm in a rush this morning, I'll check for your reply on the engine and add any other info I have later..Good luck..

Sure looks like a bargain, Alan. One of my brothers has a 2000 Power Stroke with about the same mileage on it. He just replaced the clutch in his. Dealer wanted about $1,100 for the job, so he just did it himself.
