My Truck Is Talking To Me

I'm a big Ford fan and love my diesel truck but, there's no way I'd buy a new diesel truck. They all have issues related to emissions and the 6.7 has had some turbo issues. Not a big deal to replace a turbo except that the it's a $1500 part and is a complete pain to get to.

The front seats in the F150 are very uncomfortable for me on a ride of more than an hour but, it's a really nice truck if that isn't a problem for you. These days, if you want a new truck, I'd say a gas motor is the only way to go and the Ecoboost seems to be pretty durable. They're getting some crazy horsepower out of those things with programming changes and mods and the motors seem to be holding up well so a stock motor should last a long time.

If you really want a diesel, I would look for a clean F250/F350 with the 7.3 or an older Dodge with the 24v 5.9 Cummins. The Ford bodies hold up a lot better than the Dodge but, the 7.3 is becoming rarer on the used market. Those of us that have them aren't wanting to let them go. Mine is a 2002 with 285,000 miles on it and it's still running like a champ. It's time to do injectors and I've done normal wear parts (water pump, idler pulley, ball joints, turbo, brakes, etc.) but, haven't been into the engine itself one time in all those miles.

Now that I think about it more you really need to look at the new Nissan Titan. I had a 08 and it was a great truck. Traded it at 100,000 with not a single issue. Only part replaced in all those miles was 1 tail light bulb, about $4.

The new ones have a 12,000# tow limit. My 08 was 9,500#. They offer a 400ish HP 5.6 gas motor and a Cummins diesel 5.0 motor.

My last 3 pickups have been F150 Lariat 4x4. Lotta miles and years. Only thing ever happened apart from oil, brakes, tires, was a window mechanism stopped working.

Now the current one (2012) is over 80k and I usually go 100k. So another year or so I will be looking to get another. Haven't looked at pickups since I bought the 2012. I just finished doing a comparison of Ford, Chevy, Dodge 1/2 tons plus Titan and Tundra. Online 2016 models. Just from specs and price and the various forums, it is pretty hard to see a clear winner.

I will do the same thing again when I get ready to buy, and try two or three out on the road. But based on what I see now, will probably stick with the F150 because nothing else seems definitely better to me.

Interesting suggestions. Unless I missed something the Toyota Tundra just hits the 10K towing capability which concerns me. Nissan's new Titan XD with diesel is a potential option. Have not seen one yet and from what I can tell there are few in the hands of new owners. I believe there is a TBN member with one. Hope to get to a RAM dealer in my region next. I will also check some of the seating configs on the Sierra 2500HD. The GMC dealer offered us to hook up trailers and tow what ever we like which I will probably take advantage of when I can. Being in the middle of harvest season is creating time scheduling problems.

There is another thread on TBN talking about quite a few problems with the 2012 eco-boost on the F150, but I believe that most of those problems have been eliminated with the current models. However, I am still suspicious, so when I picked up my 2016 F1150 in April, I took the 5 L V-8. By the way, the 5 L V8 makes a nice roar, whereas apparently the eco-boost is almost silent when you punch it. I suppose it's a personal thing, but I love the sound that the engine makes when you go to pass someone and you're travelling about 50 miles an hour. Makes a lovely sound as it shifts down and throttles up!

I noticed that Chevy has 0% financing for 72 months whereas GMC does not. Is there a difference in materials or options for the same truck levels...e.g. 2500HD LTZ vs SLT ? Is there any rhyme or reason when the 0% financing rolls out? BTW I'm only seeing 2016 GMC 2500HDs with black interiors within my dealer's 500 mile hunting range. Sounds like a hot interior to me. Dealer is suggesting ordering 2017 to get what I want but I'm not sure of the new hood scoop looks.

My question is why would you even consider buying another ford if you barely got 150k out of the current one?

2001 1500HD 6.0L everyday driver, minor issues here and there but overall only "serious" repairs have been alternator, starter (those 2, 3 weeks apart...) and recently knock sensors which took 4 pairs before getting a set that actually worked. I don't baby the truck either. She's level kit'Ed with 285/70/17 tires, custom wheels and cold air intake, 190k miles and I ride her 80-120mph every morning omw to work

My 1998 F150 is starting to tell me the end is near. I've had this since new and I'm up to 146K miles with it. <snip>

My question is why would you even consider buying another ford if you barely got 150k out of the current one?<snip>

My question is why consider a NEW truck when you've only driven 146K in nearly 20 years and only need to pull 10K?

I'm frugal, new vehicles are real expensive if you are only going to get limited use from them doing "ordinary" things. I got my 2002 dually almost 5 years ago because I justified that I needed payload capacity, towing capability, diesel mpg, and reliability.

I needed payload capacity and towing because I'm moving my household from DC down to Mississippi, I've tractors to drag around, I've logs to move.

I had not anticipated I would be moving gravel, pavers, etc. frequently. Last week I had to pick up a load of pavers and it's nice to get 2 ton in the bed with no problem.

I needed diesel because my trip in a gasser 450 I only got about 8 MPG.

I had not anticipated that fuel prices would go from about $4/gallon to $2/gallon.

My truck cost about half of what a new one would have been, and about a third of what a new one today would be.

Money that goes elsewhere (like tractor attachments).

My suggestion to the OP is carefully analyze your need for a truck to drive 7,000 miles a year.
