My very own grapples!

I am not a machinist, never claimed to be one, but do own some machinist tools. I have always used a mill whenever possible, even if it meant twice as long to do than with a lathe. I found out just how bad a machinist I played over the course of the week, trying to make a 1" round pin for my backhoe, because I was too cheap to spend the gas, time and money to stop by one of the tractor stores. I didn't have any 1" stock, so a piece of 1.25 was set up in the Southbend A (9") and promptly tapered to a nice funnel shape. I adjusted the tailstock and promptly made a complete mess out of that poor piece of steel. I decided to look closer for a piece of 1" and if not, I am going to drive to as many tractor shops as it takes to find/buy one.
I did get something accomlished, as I managed to order the parts for the backhoe that the seller had told me he fixed. They are enroute from Messick's as we speak, and I may get to try that New Holland hoe out (756C) to make sure it works fine before I put it on the market.
Still think you need to start a class...

Hahaha guys,
I could sure use some slave labor right now.
Wish my strapping sons would get their butts up here to help with some of this stuff but they have their own lives to deal with. I tried to lure them up with dove season opener last week, but no go.
As far as bringing your own stuff for school, I have spares. Bring your own camera. But I warn you, you'll be working you butt off making your own grapples or whatever like Loretta did. Then you'd be stuck with a new implement or attachment.:)

You mentioned about getting your sons up there to help you ;) I probably got the wrong smilley face I wanted the one with all his teeth showing.....they are probably busy on the motor cycles that you gave them;)

Oh yeah, forgot about that.
I know they've been riding because they tell me about it. Just figured they might have a spare weekend ... heck, drive those scooters up there?

Beautiful Job Mrs and Mr 3RRl!

I just removed a 50 foot wide Juniper. Pushing with the bucket this way and that way I got every branch broken up. Of course with the debris under and long branches no way moving it with the bucket to the burn pile. So hand loaded and unloaded every branch! :( Man I wish I had a Grapple!

Thank you Dan!
Yeah, once I got the bucket grapple on the Kama and then helped Loretta make hers, it's like "how in the heck did we ever get along without one?"
You know Markham just introduced a new affordable grapple. It's a full grapple not a bucket grapple like ours. Personally, I l really like the bucket grapple since it's like a compromise between a full grapple with rock bucket and a regular bucket for loader work. If you really want one, you could make a bolt on bucket grapple pretty easily yourself or buy one rather inexpensively. Unless you already have hydraulics up front or a set of rear remotes, you'd need to add that to your tractor. But by all means, get one. Everybody who has a grapple says the same thing about how handy they are. You can sure get a lot done with them in a hurry! Bucket grapples work exceptionally well with a toothbar.

I will probably build mine due to gives me something to do and save me some cash!:D I have some things to learn about hydros though.

Question on the lightening holes. We talked very belief on drilling holes in welding class. One gentleman mentioned that drilling holes may actually strengthen the part verse not drilling holes. I can see these helping a bit.

I want to hear the theory behind THAT statement.

That sure is keeping an open mind. It didn't say Winston on the pack he was smoking.... did it ? I'm sure one can get by with a certain number of placed holes but your going to have to refresh my chemistry on the metal structure particles that make it stronger because of this.

Nice work on the grapple but the lifetime I have is devoted to many other projects and experiences. Nice to see some real professionals with the "good" tools.

Whoa.........Quite amazing people throw ideas or thoughts on here and they get put down. I "thought" (oh C$#^ there I go again thinking) the purpose of this site is to share experiences and ideas. Amazing that people can put stereotypes on people without knowing the person at all.

Thanks,
Dan
