My Weekend Tow Story

/ My Weekend Tow Story #11
In high school (long ago) on a field trip in three charter buses. Guy pulled a stunt like the SUV in the utube. While he was slowing in front of our bus, the other two passed him, one about 1.1 bus lengths in front of us, the other to his left. Middle bus slowly drifted to our lane, forcing dude into the puckerbrush. A lot of delighted 14 year olds and three happy bus drivers! Don't know how the drivers communicated (1965) but it sure worked.

I had the reverse story about 12-13 years ago. Driving East on a long trip in the summer with family in the Exploder. I forget where we were at the time - Illinois, Indiana, Ohio - somewhere in there. Lots of construction zones, but they were doing the thing where they would crimp it down to one lane for 4-5 miles, then open it up for a couple miles to let things clear up a bit then crimp it back down. Similar to the youtube, i must have offended this trucker somehow. No idea how. We came up to a one-lane zone, and for a moment I thought i could get ahead of this truck so I accelerated for a second and then quickly realized no way so I immediately backed off and tucked in behind him for the slow section coming. I didn't even get up to his bumper before I called it off. When it opened up again, I went to speed up and pass, and this JA in the semi starts to weave/swerve around to push me off the road as I get up even with his trailer. Totally blindsided by this as I did nothing to him and was just driving along. He keeps trying this as I and others try to get past him. No idea what his deal was, but eventually he stopped being a road hazard and I could see him swearing at me as i passed. I went over in my head a number of times how I could have angered this guy and came to the conclusion, that he angered himself, and I just happened to be nearby. I should have called the state police but survival mode kicked in at the time, and we didn't have much for cell phones at the time. I like how the trucker in the video called the state police on the guy and they actually did something about it! "My" guy should not have had a drivers license, and especially not a CDL. There are way too many people who should not be allowed to pilot a vehicle...but yet they do.

You could use a bumper sticker to tell them how you feel.

I was a passenger in Ford Econoline going from Iowa to Colorado many years ago (I think in 1987). At some point in Nebraska we were passed by some young kids in very nicely maintained/ restored red 1960 Chevy convertible (probably priced father's car). They would pass us and then slow down to 30 miles. We would speed up and pass them. Well they would do the trick again laughing. Once or twice it can be funny but when they did it about fifth time the our driver just "kissed" them demolishing all the tail lights. They stopped laughing and left the interstate at the next exit.

When I am trailering a load who and how many are behind me is not my concern. Totally focused on what is in front of me. Since I generally cruise 3 MPH below posted limits, I almost always have a line of cars behind me and the benifit of no one in front of me.

People react in all different ways to trucks and truck trailer combinations and I feel bad for them that their life is in such utter chaos that they have to drive dangerously.

Zen trucking is the way to go...

I don't know if it's just the sign of the times or people are just getting more rude. Lots of it's because they're too busy texting someone to bother about watching where they're going. I had a car with US Government license plates cut me off a few days ago. The driver probably didn't know where she was or what she did, I saw the phone in her hand and she was texting. I really get tired of people pulling out in front of you and then won't bother to get out of the way.

Don't know what regs are where you are, but out here you are supposed to pull over if you get a stack of 5 cars behind you.

I know I do when I'm towing. I am patient with folks towing, and appreciate those who pull over like I do. Of course, sometimes they have to wait till there is a safe place to pull over...

I think that is only for really slow farm equipment. I think a truck traveling close to the speed limit is fine.

Well if there is a rule about a five car line up I will become a conscientious objector. It is suprisong the number of people who have the orchids to talegate me not enough to pass me.

For some reason those who tailgate me trust my load is secure and that my deck is clean, I do not extend that trust to others especially landscapers
