Re: My wife says I\'m buying too much tractor HELP?

Kent,

Horsepower wise it did everything I asked it to do. Mowing on the hill side was ok also for the most part. My big thing was the FEL and on the hills. Just had the back tires come off the ground too many times. I had a 60" bucket on it which I think was too big also.

But as far as Horsepower it did everything.

Re: My wife says I\'m buying too much tractor HELP?

Thanks for the reply murph,

I've got a 54 inch bucket on my tractor. I also added weight to the rear tires. Filled them with 30 gallons of Washer fluid, around 250 lbs. At first before I added the fluid the tractor was prone to the rear wheel lifting when carrying a load downhill, but after I added the weight I haven't had a bit of problem. This tractor just impresses me about everytime I use it. Thanks again.

Re: My wife says I\'m buying too much tractor HELP?

Maybe I have lost sight of how big an acre is...I live in rolling farmland in upstate ny. We own approx 40 acres that is apart of 1000 acres of semi-contiguous crop land and reforestation. On my 40 acres 3 streams of different sizes converge, and we have a pretty good size knoll with some dense forest. As I look out the window each morning I try to figure out what my fellow posters are doing with their big tractors on lots of 2 and 3 acres....I am not trying to be smart - I really am curious how you could put any hours on a tractor at all working on such a small lot? I think a BX is perfect for anything under 5 acres that includes finish mowing an gardening - that is what is intended for (!) And this talk of backhoe attachments is just silly. You can hire a zillion ton trackhoe with professional operator for $90/hr around here - so unless you are planning to dig a hole a day for the next 3 years, you are far better served hiring than buying. How much can you really dig with a BX22 bucket anyhow - is it even 12" wide? Now if it simply a matter of boys and toys, I understand. I have a barn full of toys. But after I mow the lawn around the house, brush hog trails every couple weeks, fields once a month - I am basically done. There is always a project to work on, but really I dont put that many hours on....

I will get off my high horse for now, but I am really curious about the intended uses for these expensive tractors!

I have posted that same theme a couple of times. Be prepared for the"bigger the better" boys and " you can never have to much HP" gang. They will give you answers. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif bcs

Re: My wife says I\'m buying too much tractor HELP?

SteveM,

Almost sounds like you should have started a new thread! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif And maybe titled it "I'm goin' fishing! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I think many want to err on the side of doing it once and perhaps avoiding the cost of doing it twice, so we may end up with a little more tractor than necessary. Once you decide to buy a "real tractor" the incremental cost of going a size larger [or two] often is not that much extra, especially if you spread it over a number of years [or a couple decades...]

The 'tool factor" does come into play too. /forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif We all have our tools...be it golf clubs and golf memberships, a gun safe full of thousands of dollars of equipment, whatever we feel the need for, for purposes of stress relief, enjoyment, and so on...all it takes is some money.

A cheap little Chevy or Ford will get you there the same as a large, expensive vehicle...I have driven both...almost...never really got to the expensive end of the spectrum. Not a whole lot different than the big/little tractor issue.

It seems like most buy something that will work for them, even if a little bigger than absolutely necessary. And mostly seem pretty happy with their choice.

In the end, the answer to your question probably is that people do what they feel like doing with their tractors, when they feel like doing it. And have fun doing it. Frankly, I often wonder why people spend thousands of dollars per year for season tickets for seats in sports stadiums!

In the end, it's only money...we trade if for what we need or what makes us feel good.

That may be the real answer to your question...people use their expensive tractors to get something done and feel good about it!

Guess I'll pull out that hook now...

Re: My wife says I\'m buying too much tractor HELP?

Well said Henro. It's only money, and you can't take it with you. Personally, I have no use for a $50,000 SUV that isn't designed to go off road. And if you were going off road, why would you want a luxury SUV in the first place? Different strokes for different folks. But I've got friends who have them. They don't have a tractor. In 10 years, their cars will probably be worth very little. I bet the tractor will hold its value much better, and no more sore back from digging, lifting, shoveling snow, etc. etc.

Re: My wife says I\'m buying too much tractor HELP?

Henro,

I agree with you 198%. I sit on my tractor in the evening to get away. That is my time to just forget the world and be at peace. What a person does with his money is his business. I just hope they have fun doing what ever they do.

Re: My wife says I\'m buying too much tractor HELP?

Well maybe the thing to do is go out and get brochures for all the bend-in-the-middle tractors from each company(CIH STX,NH TJ,JD 9020 series) and leave them kinda laying around where your wife will see them. Sooner or later she'll comment on them. From this point on you have her right where you want her. Tell her you were thinking that you'll never need a bigger tractor once you have one of these!! She'll then either send you for professional help,or let you buy the one you wanted in the first place, that is now smaller than the artic!! Yes it is going from the sublime to the ridiculous, but they just don't reason like we do!!

I really like this idea. Show her this pic and say you want to level the yard and I need a slightly bigger tractor. /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif
