Sgt Carter: OK all you engine-heads KNOCK IT OFF

Nah, it doesn't sound right. Gomer Pyle was definitely a "Motörhead"

:) I haven't seen that old series for a long time.

Yea,you are right for advertising slang,it works. It is still imprecise.I never flew an airplane powered by a "motor",drove a car or truck powered by one nor operated any off road equipment using a "motor"as it's prime mover. That usage is just plane wrong, undermines the credibility of the user and is akin to the use of the term "air-pocket"when speaking of in flight turbulence.l rest my case and dismount from my soap box!

A motor is a device which converts electrical energy to mechanical energy. What you probably have is an internal combustion engine. The term "motor" is used mistakenly by schoolboys,non-engineers,and race announcers. That particular usage annoys the purist in me.

 I too am against the dilution of language. -- Not just electric. The key is parasitic I think. ... air, hyd are motors too
...When I was about nine my dad had me look up engine and motor in a dictionary. That old dictionary made a distinction obvious even to a youngster. Start the engine so you can turn on the motor.;)

It is not imprecise. And engine (gasoline, steam, diesel, turbine, or otherwise) IS a type of motor according to EVERY definition I could find.

There are severaly types of motors as SPYDERLK has already hit on.

Saying "engine" just narrows it down a bit. Kinda like saying screwdriver....or "flat-head". Flat head narrows it down a bit, but it is still a "screwdriver"

Its the motion thing that blends them unfortunately. Both can impart motion. The engine does it directly - motoring the car. It is still a mistake to call it a motor in that respect. A motors energy comes from an engine thereby giving an indirect link to motion. ... An engine can act to motor [a system], but isnt one. A motor cannot act as or be an engine.

As long as this thread is this far off track.....

I always want to interrupt a motor/engine thread and ask this question, but I never do...
I may as well ask you to consider why people are compelled to give this device with a motor or engine a female gender and refer to the machine as "she". "She runs good then She just up and quits" or "She's blowin blue smoke and then She start's a knockin"
Why is this now a "She" and not an "It" or a "He"?

I used to play cowboys and engines when I was a kid (er child). My motor and fadder disproved so I ran rice corsets with a wheel barrel.

I do believe the spice shuddle uses liquid oxykleen and highergin in the main ingins and them solid busters are actually called motors (no moving parts).

I lerned all this from Craigslist !

I'll have some fun with ya here.....so dont take it the wrong way, there are differing opinions and IMO, call it watever you want. I certainly aint gonna think you are any less creditable either way......so here goes'

So, if a motor gets it power from an "engine",

What about a hydraulic "motor" if the pump is driven by an electric motor? Would that make it an electric engine?

Or what about air motors?

Or what about all of this solar power. If I run an electric motor off a solar panel, where is the "engine" giving it its power?

I still like the simple definition that a "motor" is a device used to transform energy into motion:thumbsup: And an "engine" is a TYPE of motor. Just like a Taurus is a Ford. So is it improper to call you Taurus just a "ford"?
