If it runs fine on the battery jumped, you have a fail in the ignition wiring.

Ps I doubt your coil has an internal resistor vs the correct number of turns of primary wire.

A napa 12v IC14SB would be the correct coil for it?

yes... ic14sb no internal resistor. it's primary is merely wound with the correct number of turns of the correct diameter wire to make the correct primary resistance.

If by chance it runs still the same with coil wired directly to battery, then I check fuel. I did happen to pull plug on float bowl of carburetor, and I had fuel running out of plug at a good rate for about a minute or two with no change. I did notice the spark plugs were black with soot on them. That could mean it may be running rich. When I first drained it there was a bunch of crud that came out of it.

Rich, yeah. And that can be plain too much fuel or a vacuum leak

A vacuum leak can develop at the intake manifold, and carburetor. Can there be a leak anywhere else on the tractor? What is a good way to test for them?

The best way, that know of to check for vacuum leaks, is with a flammable aerosol. WD 40 or some other flammable spray. When sprayed in the area of a vacuum leak, the engine rpm will smooth out.

Up date

Well after redoing all of the primary and secondary rewiring except the condenser. Which was the problem the tractor is running how it was when I got it. Which is fine. It starts right away and runs well now. Well maybe.

It runs the best with the idle jet seated all the way in. So I don't know if it would be that part of the carburetor circuit, or something else with the engine to look at.

Idle needle in enriches, out to lean. ( air needle)

Main is a fuel needle, out to enrich, in to lean

The needle is seated all the way tight. It seems it could of kept going to actually make the engine run better. It still runs decent. The main needle I adjusted to where the engine struggled then backed it out to where it is running good with that part of the circuit at a high rpm.

So I don't know if there is something not right with the idle circuit. Or if it could be getting its air from some other faulted source.
