If I relied solely on professional advice most of my equipment would either need repair waiting for said advice or inoperative because of using said advice.

At this point I'm building up my ignore list because asking how guys who fix equipment tires for a living fix a nail hole is too much to ask.

People needn't be a pro to know what the correct procedure is or to be able to point to an expert (an appeal to authority).

For example: this is an appeal to authority:

What happens if I get a puncture?
Most minor punctures in tubeless tires can be fixed by plugging the hole just like a car tire. First, rotate the hole to the top and remove the object that caused the puncture. Next, follow the instructions on the plug kit. Do not continue to operate the tractor on a soft tire. You will risk breaking the bead away from the rim and losing all of the Rim Guard®.

Sounds as though I can simply plug the thing like a car or truck tire, a thing i did not know because I'm an auto tech, not a heavy equipment tech.

I would sure try the plug first, what do you have to lose? I wonder if it will work, the plugs have an adhesive coating.... Probably should roll the tire where the hole is on top, let it sit for a few hours to drip dry internally. Let us know!!

I've used those sticky rubber plugs plenty of times. (The ones that look like licorice). Never used them in a loaded tyre, but most tyres are a little damp on the inside anyway in my experience. They have always stuck just fine once the hole is reamed out with the tool provided.

An old man told me once that there's no future in being a mule or tire changer. So professional opinions may be hard to get. In fact you could go back and review the recent thread about what everybody doe for a living. See if there are any tire repairmen on TBN and pm them.

I believe rimguard on there website talks about how to repair a tire with a plug. Or at least they did at one time.

I have a funny feeling that asking 3 different professional tireaderos what procedure they use would elicit 3 different procedures. One or more of these may be satisfactory, in terms of results & your toolset.

Disclaimer: I'm note a professional tireadero.

That being said, if it were my tire, I'd try putting the hole a 12 o'clock, jacking the wheel up & off of the ground, so the rim-guard doesn't come out when all the air does, and use a tire plug kit to fix it. When done, you can keep the tire kit, a 12V compressor and a bottle of soapy water (for leak locating) in your road vehicle of choice. There are few things so satisfying as fixing a flat tire on the side of the road and being on your way in under 30 minutes.

Happy motoring!

I don't know how it works on tractors but on a vehicle I only consider a externally installed plug to be a temporary repair. It seems like the squirming of the tires causes small pieces of the steel belt to break off and migrate through the plug causing another leak. At least I think that's what happens. So in my experience a plug only lasts about 10000 km's or 6000 miles. I use them all the time because they let me wait until I have time to get an internal patch installed.

With rim guard I have no idea what happens as I have no experience. I would tend to think that the sticky beet juice would help seal any small holes but I've been wrong before. If you use a plug as I would do you can keep an eye on it and let us know what happens. Then we can all benefit from your experience. My tire shop does not mind when I use a plug and then bring the tire in later for a patch.

Note to self: when the Oracle post a question on TBN, he wants replies only from professionals.

On vehicle tires there are places where external plug repair isn't legal.

The best may be professional service at a tire shop. If it's a good and expensive tire the repair should require dismounting the tire.

I'm not a "professional" but for a permanent repair I never use just a plug or just a patch; I use one of these if the hole is in an area that is repairable.
