I actually got my first car when I was 13-14. 68 Pontiac Strato-Chief.
350 with a 2 speed auto.
Drove it all over the farm.
One of the best things that summer was after Pa harvested the wheat.
The stubble was as slick as ice. Race into that field and crank the wheel and go into a spin, soil flying past the side window from the tire.
Best thing was learning the limits of the car. Didn't have to worry aboot hitting anything.
When I went for my license I drove like a veteran not some nervous pimple popper.
My mom took me out on a local city park parking lot in the snow and showed me how to do donuts, handle a slide, correct it, lose control, etc... good lessons. VW vans are great in the snow.

When it came time to teach our kids how to drive, my wife and I did the same things with them. Impala was front wheel drive with traction and stability control. Pretty good snow car. I'd put the 93 Suburban in 2wd and let them experience that.... those light poles seem to move around on their own. 🤣

We did not heave enough snow to show my son how to drive in it in the last two years.
We did have massive flooding while he was learning and I got to show him how to do approach, gauge depth and flow and when to turn around and not even try it.

Maybe this year I will get to show him 2wd vs 4wd and slow takeoff and skidding. I did all of that learning in a big parking lot with my friends and one of their pintos.
So if (when) we hit stuff, it wasn't a big deal. More fun than my dad trying to teach me driving.

The only time I ever backed into a sign was when my father was trying to "teach" me how to drive.
2 point turn, on the backup he told me to keep going straight back, even though I told him the sign was getting closer.
He agreed, once I hit the sign :)

I learned to drive by sitting on the floor between the front seats of our VW van and watching my mom use the pedals and shifter for about a dozen years. As soon as I turned 15 I got my learner's permit and my dad drove us over to the local cemetery (great place to learn) and told me to get in the driver's seat. I stalled it first attempt to use the clutch, but after that I was fine.... until I got a bit cocky and took a corner too fast and took out a shrub. 🤣

We switched places and dad drove home. Then we tried the Nova with 3 on the tree. I did that pretty well, too. From that point on, my folks made me drive them everywhere we went so I'd get practice.

When it came time for driver's ed at high school, I was pretty good already. It was some huge 4 door car with two couches for seats and an automatic trans. It even had a little lever to adjust the driver's side mirror. OOOoooo. Fancy.
Not much chance of killing anyone learning to drive in a cemetery.

Just us and that shrub! 🤣

Was just in the same cemetery Sunday putting in some fall mums for the folks that taught me to drive... and some other relatives, too. :)

My Grandma used have my sister practice in a cemetery a lot. My Great Grandma never learned how to drive and so she was paranoid my sister could end up that way. And it was a fun way for them to spend time together.

No problems teaching my daughter to drive. My son on the other hand  I had to explain to him when I’m screaming STOP at the top of my lungs it means to stop and not look around trying to figure out why.

Years ago a neighbor was killed.
He was a passenger in his friends pickup and at an intersection said "whoa", his friend thought he said "go", they were T-boned by another truck.
