NASCAR Race to the Chase

/ NASCAR Race to the Chase #21
Long time NASCAR fan and this "chase" setup S***S! If you look at it as a "playoff* it's the longest series in sports. No underdogs and non playoff participants can ruin your chance, give me a break. The France's and Nextel have "money on their minds". I'm all for revamping the points system but to leave it up to 10 drivers and have outside influence just ain't what sport is about!

Time for my daily rant!

Here's what I'd change if I was "in charge" at NASCAR.

Points system; Pay out MORE points for winning, and LESS for 20th place. (No points beyond 10th in my world)

Deduct 25 points from Jeff Gordons total every time there's a caution flag.

Teams could have as many cars as they like, but ONLY ONE would be eligable to score points per race.

Deduct 25 points from Jeff Gordons total every time Darryl Waltrip says Boogity-boogity-boogity

Cars/drivers/teams would IMMEDIATELY be withdrawn from a race if it was obvious they INTENTIONALLY CAUSED a wreck. (Dale Jarret 2 weeks ago!)

Deduct 25 points from Jeff Gordons total every time you see a mullet-wearin', beer swillin' fan in a crowd shot.

Have ALL the races on saturday night, with MOST being short-track events.

Deduct any remaining points Jeff Gordon has just because I don't like his attitude.

Give Mark Martin a Cup Championship. He deserves one.

Deduct Jeff Gordon

I probably have more "favorite" drivers than drivers I don't like. One comment though (at the risk of hurting someone's feelings), why is Kyle Petty even out there driving?!! Granted, there is no doubt that he is a nice guy and a good person. However, there are a lot of people who would fit that generalization. With they money they have, why make the "Petty" name synonymous with "loser" or "also ran"?! They consider it a good run if they are only a lap or two down! In the last few years, he has only been ahead of one or two drivers who have also run the full schedule. For all intents and purposes, he's been consistantly dead last of all the guys who run the full schedule.

I've only watched NASCAR for about the last 5 years or so. Actually, I watch it for work reasons. If I can't talk the NASCAR talk, I can't carry on a conversation with about half of my clients! Anyway, I've read and heard where Richard Petty was the "King" of NASCAR in his day. His son is making a joke of the winning ways. Honestly; why doesn't he continue being the good guy he is, but put a butt in the seat of his car that can actually drive?!! /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

'Cause he can.... Kyle won a few races back in the 80's. He's able to continue because of his name, and the sponsors that are willing to pay his way.

There's about 20 legitimate "contenders", of which maybe 12 or 14 can actually be counted on to run consistantly well. The rest are "field fillers". If they're gonna fill the grid with cars that can't be counted on to win, why not at least one that people recognize.

Nascar fan since Petty meant LEE PETTY!

Not anymore. I believe I read where if Petty is going to continue to be a field filler, he is going to have to pony up quite a bit of his own money. Most sponsors apparently don't want to be associated with losing drivers. The only time you see Kyle Petty's car getting TV exposure is when he crashes, causes a crash, is being lapped, or when you look to see who is last in the "Coke drivers". No arguement that he is a nice guy, but I don't agree with the concept of field fillers. With the talent and money available, there is no need.

I raced motocross for several years. As soon as I became part of the group that allowed the other part to be in the top third, I hung up my helmet. Personally, I would not go out and "race" just to be lapped traffic for competitive drivers.

Owensboro, KY is only a 30 minute drive from where I live and there are plenty of NASCAR drivers who reign from little Owensboro. However, even Owensboro residents think DW stayed too long. By the way, I'm through Tony Stewart's hometown nearly every month, as well as Ryan Newman's, and the "stopping off point" of Jeff Gordon.

Being that we are on the subject, do you think "Mr. Excitement" would have punched Stewart or Newman?! /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif That would be fun to see. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif Especially Stewart; he is a true Indiana redneck who happens to be able to race (and race well) about anything on wheels.

"Mr. Excitement" has become a part-time field filler himself.

Not too sure there'd be enough cars to fill the field without a few of the permanent back-markers like Kurt Shelmerdine, Any of the Bodines, Carl Long, or a host of others.

Have you ever looked at the money (winnings) of a 40th place entry in a typical NASCAR event? There's your reason for the hangers-on, and the field-fillers! Cha-CHING!

Isn't this subject getting pretty close to religion ? /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I don't really follow sports that requires little skill (as far as the driver is concerned) and relies on money to buy the best equipment.

I have to agree that the points system is rediculous. I cant see how someone can come into a race in 1st place with a 30point lead and finish in 20th but still be ahead of 2nd place points guy who won the race.... There are far too many variables that I just cant keep up with, just dense I guess...

My soloution would be to put a cost cap on the cars. You could only spend $100000 for your car, for the year, one car, no backups, one engine, one trans, etc.............. Lets see who the best is then......Oh, by the way, the driver also has to be the lead wrench... /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
