I think the whole idea is ludicrous myself. There are already enough laws that if ENFORCED would handle the illegal immigrant/terrorist situation without the loss of privacy of the NON-infringing US citizens.

Both sides are to blame, Liberals tries to make everything into shades of grey and be sympathetic/compassionate to the illegal immigrants. The conservatives who are handmaids of business leave them alone because they have the belief that they perform a role here.

If they are ILLEGAL, get them gone. Don't let them function in society. If they aren't either US citizens or are here on legal papers of some sort, then enforce the CURRENT laws by doing the following: 1) don't let them buy or rent a living space, 2) don't let them have a drivers license, 3) no handout money from the government , 4) don't let them get bank loans, 5) hold companies accountable who hire them illegally, 6) be only compassionate enough to stop them from dying if they are in an accident, but no more free health care than that and send them back to their own country.

Bottom line.. if you are here illegally.. the best that you SHOULD be able to do is live as a homeless person on the streets.

Pilonidal... those statements miss the point by so much it is stratospheric.

The way this country was designed was so that if you are doing nothing wrong, THEN YOU HAVE NO FEAR OF THE GOVERNMENT GETTING IN YOUR BUSINESS.

I regularly walk out of Sam's Club and BJ's warehouses and just smile when they ask for my receipt... or I ask if I am being accused of stealing something, when they say no, I just keep walking to the truck. It is my RIGHT to not lose my privacy and to not be searched (treated like a criminal). I have even had policemen stationed at the fronts of these places back off simply because they realized that I KNEW my rights and was not willing to give them up.

You are correct that the national ID card is nothing huge and in the short term is not MUCH worse than a drivers license. But it is the incremental loss of rights that add up over time... our rights this day and time are HIGHLY curtailed from what they were even 50 years ago. Copyright law has run amok eroding fair use rights. People freely give these up every day simply because most do not know what their rights really are!

there was a big court decision on the medical records privacy law. Employees of the company cannot be prosecuted for giving out your personal medical info. The law is already gutted..

Source of this information? Someone in CA was just criminally prosecuted under the HIPAA regulations.

The short coming of HIPAA, as I understand it, it that it only relates to health information that is "electronicaly transmitted", 
There are 2 sections of HIPAA, Privacy and Security. ePHI falls under the Security regulations. Disclosure of PHI are also covered under the Privacy regs.

My opinion is that both of these measures really only spell out "best practices" that companies should have been following all along. 
They also spell out the processes and procedures as well as the associated documentation that must be maintained, i.e., proof that a company is following the best practices.

 Besides, the laws haven't stopped hackers from getting into the banks and credit card companies. 
The fall out from the recent episodes are not complete. I imagine once the facts are known, there will be criminal and civil proceedings.

Just like 25 years ago the internet was a dream (not thanks to the militray) and the personal PC for under $2000 was a pipe dream 40 years ago...and the list goes on and on. 
Neither the Internet nor the PC were from the government. I go back to my initial example, if sharing information/databases were easy, then having a common, terrorist watch list would be a reality.

While there are great IT people working for the government, getting over the turf walls between agencies is the biggest barrier.

While there are great IT people working for the government, getting over the turf walls between agencies is the biggest barrier.

From what I was told from IS people ( no the grunts either, NASA people) was they the basic concepts started with the military sharing info online way back (old “internet”). This was the ground work for the internet (1960’s) and then it was born; just on a different level.

Again, for me, working for a huge company of over 200K people, the government is no different then other large businesses. It is like people at my work said paperless design will never happen. They did. They stated drawings designs would never happen, they did. It is called technology at work.

It is coming and it is just a matter of time. It is like in our state; our car/truck inspections stickers are all tied into a hude database. If you have a warrant, you can’t get a sticker and they will track you down ASAP. If you own money they know, etc.

People can talk about “I.T.” laws etc but remember the people wanted the data could careless.

I do not know if I agree with the technology being funded by private people since our NASA sector develops pretty cool stuff along with outr Military people. All this many years before making it common knowledge. Then we sell if to the commercial side and make some good money. It is like out spare cost for the Military, you would be amazed on what we charge the taxpayers (you and me) for stuff! Unreal.
