From what I was told from IS people ( no the grunts either, NASA people) was they the basic concepts started with the military sharing info online way back (old “internet”).
It was called ARPANET, Click ----> Here. I worked with people who were on this project in the mid-70s. ARPANET, while important, doesn't equal Internet.

( Agreed, But I also believe that IT people vastly underestimate the risk of that information getting into the hands of people who want it for other purposes. )

I missed this the first time through this thread. I think you have it wrong. IT people typically have the deepest understanding and have the birds eye view on how dangerous this is. It is the evil marketing/PR departments that play down this risk to the public.

IT people like myself USUALLY err on the side of being too secure unless forced to do so otherwise. By nature most people in my profession lean toward being tin foil hat types if for no other reason than seeing on a daily basis how sinister and embedded attacks can be.

( Neither the Internet nor the PC were from the government. I go back to my initial example, if sharing information/databases were easy, then having a common, terrorist watch list would be a reality. )

Mike, this sharing of resources is exactly why people SHOULD be wary of not just National ID card and the like but also be critical of who has their information for any reason.

There are LOTS of companies out there that I would like to trust, and actually DO trust. The real problem with todays laws and the loss of rights, is that even though I may choose to trust a certain company, I have NO rights to choose who they trust it with and THAT is where most breaches occur. I have no right to say how my data is used. If I (my personal information) gets added to a database maintained by a company that I like and respect and even trust. I cannot restrict that company from making a buck off of that information and selling it to a marketing list. In essence , I have no control over the CHAIN of trust. I can only choose to trust the first party in a chain, once the data is out, I have no control over it. So therefore, I end up NOT trusting companies, that I otherwise would if I were given control over my own data.

Make no mistake. Even BANKS make money selling different levels of your information. Call me the tin foil hat type again, but I take great offense at any company selling any data related to me, even if it is anonymized, without my permission.

Me too, they should at least pay me something for it.

Who to trust??????

These guys???
No?
How about this one??? Its funny because if you decline to let the government use your information, you remain in their database. Humerous quote from the article: ( The Pentagon's statements added that anyone can "opt out" of the system by providing detailed personal information that will be kept in a separate "suppression file." That file will be matched with the full database regularly to ensure that those who do not wish to be contacted are not, according to the Pentagon.)
IT can help us, right? We do our best but we're always behind the curve. You can't build a defense on attacks that don't exist yet.
More people trusted by the people that we trust, but we have no say in who they trust.
This one is the funniest one yet.

Get ... the ... idea???

Trust should be given VERY sparingly when we have so little control after the fact.

Mike.. how is that for backing up my point? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

MikePA,
Perhaps you haven't flown with a commercial airline lately.
Having me remove my shoes to search them, jeez, come on.

I guess the air is thin here on the forum. The id is not about the illegals.
The whole point is GOV'T is getting too big.
Not to mention, the boneheaded decisions that our judicial and our legislative branches have recently made.
