Re: Nature\'s Garden

I was probably high in my estimate, GlueGuy. I got the basic camera at $799 (which now sells for about $500) and then I added four 32Mbyte memory cards, a standalone USB card reader, external flash, wide angle lens (useless), extra battery, external battery charger, pro tripod, case, and software (ACDsee from ACD Systems is my favorite). That brought my cost to $1,500, but you could eliminate a couple of those things if you get built-in USB and buy a camera that uses "off-the-shelf" batteries. /w3tcompact/icons/cool.gif

Of course, if you think the choices in tractors are confusing, wait 'til you spend hours-on-hours comparing features of digital cameras./w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif

Re: Nature\'s Garden

Lessee. I have the USB stuff already, and the tripod. Don't need a special case. Might need more memory. Was thinking about 128MB in a single card. The camera I'm looking at is a little over $500, but comes with a $100 rebate. Might want a macro lens. Have a nice flash already. Heck, I might still be able to do this for less than a grand...

Re: Nature\'s Garden

Hey Glue...

I've got an Olympus 2020Z and it's great. It's a 2.1megapixel which is all I could ever imagine needing. I use it all the time and have a true photo printer and the pics at only 1024x768 are suitable for framing if you use photo film instead of photo paper. You can pick up the 2020 for around $500+/- now.

Re: Nature\'s Garden

Actually I was looking at the Kodak DC4800. It's a 3.4 mega pixel unit, and retails for $699. However, I've seen it on the net for around $525 plus a $100 rebate (nets out at $425 or so). The reviews on it have been pretty good, and the lens can be swapped in/out with alternatives (like a zoom or macro). The only thing I don't like about it is that the compact flash is the old style, so you can't put in a mini-disc (1 GB storage).

Re: Nature\'s Garden

Yep. The digital's have really come a long way... both on feature and price. I paid $900 for my first Olympus, a DL300 with 1024x768 max res. and no zoom. Now you can pick better cameras than that up for a couple hundred bucks. Problem with all the new Megapixel cameras is that they require mega-storage for top-end res and what are you gonna do with a picture of such high resolution when there are no printers available to print at that resolution? Guess it's just that us "boys" like all the bells 'n whistles on our "toys"

Re: Nature\'s Garden

I've read that when digitals get to 8Mpixel they will be equivalent to film resolution. Then it's "just" the printer technology (as you mention). Don't worry, I've also read elsewhere that printer technology is moving right along too. Gotta come slow though. All those engineers are on the "mortgage continuation program". If they make advances too fast, they run out of greckles for the mortgage... /w3tcompact/icons/laugh.gif

Re: Nature\'s Garden

GlueGuy,

I think on the self technology is so far advanced that we'd think its Star Wars if we ever saw it. Problem is it's ON THE SHELF. 64 bit computer chips have been around for a long time, but you can't get one in your desk top, until next year. I bet the 132's are already on the shelf or at least in beta testing. But, these guys aren't going to release that stuff until they've made enough money on the chips that are already out. It's similar for cameras and printers. Spy satellites can take a picture of your license plate. (Maybe count the hairs on a fruit fly). Now THAT'S resolution! /w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif
