So I'm in the process of figuring out what the pivot trunnions are and from what I've seen, it's what these bolts are holding:

So if I have this correct:
  1. Jack and support the front end.
  2. Remove these 4 bolts,
  3. lift the front end some more,
  4. move the axle forward,
  5. lift the drive connector up,
  6. move the axle back inserting the part into the drive connector,
  7. Move axle back into place
  8. reconnect the removed bolts into existing holes.
  9. tighten the living bageezus out of the bolts.
Am I in the ballpark?

Thanks!
Your plan is right on the mark. You only need to jack it high enough to move the axle forward.

Update!

I lifted the air filter by 1/2" above the coolant hole on the engine and can go higher(Pics 1,2). The issue I have now is the hood. In the original post I stated that the front loader bent the hood a few years ago. I removed the hood and took it to a metal shop which pounded out the dents(Pics 8,9). They did a good job compared to what it looked like but the air filter is about 5" from where it should be(Pics 3,4,5,6,7). When looking down the right side of the tractor the hood is approximately 2" from the radiator(Pic 11). The height of the hood in the right side front is approximately 22"(Pic 10). I'm wondering how far from the radiator should the hood be on the side?

My guess is that if I have it hammered in from the right(and left) side some more, that will raise the hood(hopefully enough) for the air filter to fit in the hole.

Another thought is to raise the hood from the hinges an inch or so. My only issue is this - I'm skeptical that where the hood bolts meet the hinge bar can take being pulled apart, seeing the rust.

Thanks for any advice!

jones6780 has done this to his own Ford1700. That was the thread I quoted earlier.

Jones has one such a great job on his overhaul work. Real processional and quite nice "how to" for 1700 owners.

NEXT STEPS COMPLETE - almost...

I got all four bolts holding the pivot loosened. Tractor is jacked up and secure. Took out the four bolts and lowered the axle. The rear came down but the front is up and won't come down. Is this because of the steering part that is clamped to the wheel/axle? I loosened it as seen in the photo but it hasn't come apart - then I thought I should ask all the kind people here for advice.

I've attached two photos. The rear of the pivot which is lowered and the steering part.

Thanks again!

Edit - So I've added photos of the front of the Axle.

With the bolt removed on pic#3 did you try to strike it with a 4 lb hammer ? it is not welded and nothing is holding it, right?

I am relying on the FWA front axle pdf that I posted few posts previously. I looked at it again . With the 4 bolts removed and axle loosened at both knuckle on left and right wheel, then can you not lower the front diffy on a floor jack and push the whole assembly forward?

I'll try hitting it with a 4lb hammer as suggested. I'm looking at the diagram and it should come loose. I was hitting it with the only hammer I could find at the moment and of course it wasn't budging.

Thanks for the info, I wanted to make sure there wasn't some not so obvious reason it wasn't coming apart.

SUCCESS!!!!...... I think?

The reason the front wasn't coming down was because there are two guide pins that line up the holes. With some blood, sweat, begging, yelling, cursing, praying and tears, it pried loose. Lots of wiggling and maneuvering with the help of a hockey stick I was able to attach the drive shaft and get one hole at a time lined up and bolted back on.

I was told by JC and others that it was a difficult job. The most difficult part was the lack of room to work. Oh, and never doing it before. Yeah, that comes into play...

Test drive tomorrow!

Thanks All!

Awesome and good work. The lining up dowels were shown on the diagram, just needed to zoom in and look closer. The same dowel is on Manual steering box just the same . You have done great not having done it before. Now when you try it tomorrow start it very slowly. Yet better is to raise both axle , all 4 wheels off of ground, stat the tractor , FWA engaged with Gear in Neutral, clutch and put in lowest gear. You would want do it so if anything is binding you hear without putting a lot of load on transfer case gears, transmission or front diffy. I Think you'll be fine but cannot be too careful. Good job.
