ddivinia, I looked at your site and photos.

Heck, you can even see grass as well as your cattle:eek: Cute calves:D

I only see cedar trees...need photos of your mesquite problem to better judge the issue. Those cedar trees can be chain sawed at the base.. get all green branches and you have a dead tree. Let the tree lie on the ground and it will provide a wildlife shelter and keep those longhorns from destrohying all the grass in case the drought gets too bad.

Now, time to think out of the box.... you have cattle and mesquite..... mesquite grilled steaks are really dandy.... and, you get to keep two densities in check at the same time.

That is where I live day to day. We pulled out and burned 100s of cedars - the place was over grown. I keep the longhorrns out of my hay pastures - it would not take them long to destroy them if it was wet or too dry.

We have plenty of mesquite and beef to go arund.

I'll find some pics of my other place.

Also - if you need some longhorns (or mesquites for that matter) - let me know.

Here are some pics. The front has a lot more mesquites. In the back - more oaks, etc. It is really overgrown in sections except where the hogs have beat everything down...

Well, D, it's plain to me that what you need is on site expertise.... like maybe this next hunting season I can come up and look everything over... need to take some of those deer and turkey lumps out of the road since they mess up the front bumper;)

Looks like a good hunting spot.... go after those hogs, too....

Photos do show the mesquite situation... I'd get two rigs...one set up for foliar spray and one for basal application. Since you have lots of "good brush" I'd use chemicals very specific to mesquite...not a broad based chemical. This year is the experimental one for you... spray foliar the trees that are hard to get to... use basal for the single stemmed stuff.... The sooner you get going, the better.

Thanks for the Longhorn offer... but my droughty pastures are full up with Beefmasters at present.

Here is my spray rig.

I added a boomless nozzle to it this year.

excellent rig... ideal for what you need... this will get you close to the trees. I used something almost identical except I had a 2 wheel trailer with 300 gal tank on it... made it so long I could not get into tight places.

FYI, I added a 100 ft or so long hose to the hand sprayer....park the rig UPWIND of the offending tree mott and drag the hose into it as far as you can go letting the breeze assist you in getting canopy coverage. I'd figure out how to remove/stow the vertical booms so they don't catch in the trees as you weave among them. I tried those instant hose connect/disconnect devices but they always were drippy and leaked too much under the pressure. I don't recommend them... regular brass fittings and rubber washers work fine.

In about 1 week you can begin to see the effect on the leaves and you can go back and catch trees you missed (there WILL be some).

I'd use this rig for foliar spray and try a hand pump rig, with some sort of wheel arrangement so you save your back for basal stem applications... this uses less material, a different chemical mix and you need to get right up to within inches of each plant to spray the stem...thus, you are off of the tractor anyway.

You are set... go get your chemicals..oh, yes, gloves, glass measuring cups, goggles to keep from splashing in your eyes... containers for the diesel... I dedicated some boots, long sleeve shirts and pants to the chore. The stuff WILL get on you and you want to keep it away as much as possible. Change clothes right after spraying. Wash well as soon as possible when you finish. There is a genuine safety issue here... read up on the procedures and follow them..you'll be fine.

One more thing.... get the particular number conejet that the BRUSHBUSTERS recommend (or similar) at their site. For basal applications, you want a low pressure, swirling spray that wraps around the stem and is highly directional.... this cone reduces the amount of herbicide used dramatically... without reducing kill rate... a real winner!

I was raised that the only way to control mesquite was to grub it out. That sometimes requires a hole five foot deep.
