Not sure who built them for Ford. They actually built darn few implements of their own in those days.

Whoever it was did a good job. it was a lil boxy and ugly.. but was tough.

Bush Hog (the brand) built the first commercially successful bush hog (the generic name) back in the early 1950's. (They patented the "stump jumper") It had a nice rounded tail end, a gearbox that was nothing short of indestructable, enough iron in the deck and hitch to build a half-dozen of todays mowers, and a pto shaft that weighed a ton.

The immitators from everyone that followed had big, boxy, squarish decks and progressively got lighter and lighter as time went along.

In recent years, everyone is returning to the rounded deck again.

Just curious, what problems did the lx6 have. ( I posted some of the problems my 1517 had. ). I know a guy with a mx10.. looks good, but I've never mowed with it..

At the moment, a fractured, completely useless tailwheel that turned out to be made of paper-thin sheetmetal. I have a separate thread running on that. When it was first delivered, the blade pan was bent up, and I had to post on here to see if it was normal, then have the dealer pick it up and replace the pan. You could find that thread with a search, if you want to.

(I'm not trying to hijack this thread.)

Bent blade pan?!...Maybe they stressed the wheel while they had it in their possession...during pickup or delivery or while they were repairing it...

I just wanted to thank everyone for there input on this thread. The wife and I went to the dealer this weekend and looked at what they had to offer. Ended up getting the Howse medium duty model 606HT with a slip clutch for just under a grand. Overall I am very pleased with the unit, it is built ugly, but it is definitely tough. The unit has a 100 HP gear box and weighs in at just shy of 1000#. I just could not justify the extra $500 dollars or so for the Bush Hog unit.

Thanks,
Tom

I have a Landspride older model that has done some serious damage to a lot of rough stuff with no apparent gear damage even thoug it had a broken blade when I got it.

Interesting landspride has not been mentioned, am I alone as a supporter?

I think landpride makes quality stuff. For the uses you described you'll be just fine with the howse. You're really just cutting grass and you could probably even go with a 7 footer. I have the 5 foot bushog squealer on a 26hp kubota L2500 gear. The tractor is actually rated for a 6 footer but I think that would be pushing things a bit from a 3 point lift point of view. Awful lot of weight hanging off the back there when you consider the leverage issue.

I think you made a good choice. The hog itself is ok.. as would a couple of others.. but the slip clutch was a smart investment / choice. Make sure you maintain it like the manual instructs.
