Mahindra 4550
I am looking for some wisdom (or advice) on installing an exhaust pipe extension on my Mahindra 4550. I have very little experience with diesel tractors so I would appreciate some learning from folks who know something about the Mahindra's mCRD technology. On 2/22/19 Hamiltonville farm posted that they 殿dded a piece of 18" flexible exhaust pipe to their Mahindra 4540 exaust. ( https://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/mahindra-owning-operating/408943-4540-exhaust.html). I have been thinking of doing the same thing to my 4550, however, not knowing how the added exhaust pipe would impact the operation of the diesel oxidation catalyst after treatment system I am hesitant.

So my first question is: Would adding an exhaust pipe extension negatively impact the operation of the tractor's exhaust system?

My second question is: Are there any reasons that I should not install the extension, and if so, what are they?

Thanks in advance for any education you can give me with on this!

Adding additional pipe after the catalyst that is the same size or bigger will have negligible impact- especially at that length. Their is no reason not to if it will suit your needs.

The flexible stuff is a little “homeowner” but will do. I’d probably buy some bends and weld it up if it was mine- maybe after the flexible “proof of concept”

Adding a chunk of exhaust pipe was the first modification I did to my 4540. The pipe was pointing directly at one of the structural members for the front end loader and consequently blowing back in my face.

I went to the auto parts store and got a 45 degree bend in the proper size. I got everything lined up the way I wanted it and marked it. Then I drill some holes and put in some sheet metal screws.

It has been doing fine for over two years.

It shouldn't have an effect on the DOC. The DOC is just a catalytic converter like you'd have on a car. As long as you are using the same size or larger pipe then it shouldn't restrict the flow enough to make a difference.

I have a 3525 Mahindra with the exhaust coming out near the rear wheel that blows fumes in my face while I am adding/changing attachments(like a tiller, bush hog, etc.)....how can I remedy that with an extension of some sort?

SHUT THE TRACTOR OFF WHEN CHANGING PTO POWERED ATTACHMENTS.
Did I say that loud enough?

On a more reasonable vein, with the rear exhaust it is difficult not to get fumes in your face.
It doesn't matter if its hooking up implements or doing stationary work near the rear of the tractor.
The only way to reduce it would be an extension that took the rear up in the air,
maybe a slip on that attaches to a bracket or two of your rops?

Over the years I have added extensions to exhaust and discovered that mandrel bends made for street rod headers are exactly the right size and thickness. You usually have to cut a larger piece to get exactly what you need but it works for me and looks factory original. The "U" bend cut at the center of the radius gives the correct turned tip and there's enough length to make it look right. There's a pic on TBN from an old thread I did on a Kubota. I get my bends from Summit Racing or Jeg's Performance. Pipes are surprisingly cheap and $8 comes to mind. They come in all sorts of sizes.

For paint, I find Rustoleum BBQ high temp satin black is an exact match for most exhaust pipes.
