Need advice on trailer purchase

Trailers are an interesting subject. You can compare similar Ford, GM, and Ram trucks and the basic builds are much more similar than different. With trailers, you can put two side-by-side, with the same spec’d capabilities and they may be completely different. Beyond the main frame: channel, I-beam, tube, even angle; the box design and supports can all be completely different. Supports 12” on center are generally an upgrade (or on the premium lines), but I’ve seen trailers with 24” on center supports, with 16”-18” being the most common. Ironically, the one with the extra supports actually has a lower payload capacity, since it all comes from the GVWR.

That's funny, this one weighs in at 1990 lbs, 18' with 2' dovetail and 2 7k axles with brakes on both axles.

I’m going to join the camp that says that’s either under built, not a 14k trailer or the weight is incorrect.

And that's actually on the lighter side for that size trailer. A HD 14k 20ft can be 4-4500lbs depending on options!.

I've been looking at a trailer to buy and this is the empty weight range of the ones I'm looking at.

I wouldn’t buy a 14k trailer that weighed that much. My 16k dump trailer weighs 4500-4600 pounds and my 24’ 20k trailers weighs 5500 pounds.

Might be underbuilt, but it has hauled any and everything and I have never had a problem with it or it could be that the trailer manufacturer falsified the weight but if they did they did it on probably well over several thousand of these trailers as they built a lot of them, but either way my under engineered /under built trailer would probably be a perfect fit for the OP, as I have hauled my little tractor with FEL and loaded rear tires with a 6' bush hog all over the place on it without issue.

Agreed, the trailers I'm looking at can be spc'd with 8k oil bath axles which is what I would do, but they are standard with 7k axles.

Most are heavy due to options like HD ramps, 12in OC crossmembers, oak decking etc. Or they are tilt decks.

One of my requirements is that it can hold my 9k lbs forlift, the point loading for it is pretty high, hence the higher spc'd trailer.

There are 7k oil baths. Just saw a Lamar dump with triple 7's-oil baths.

My dump trailer with 8k axels has oil bath caps but the spindles are greased. If I knew the back seals would handle it it I’d dump oil in them.

You can even get oil bath hubs for 3500lb axles if you want. Pluses and minuses to both. For my uses I think 8k axles either greased or oil would work, I just like oil because I hate packing bearings.

Next time you work on the breaks just throw some oil style seals in them.

Until you crack/break a hub, then you won’t like oil as much.
