Hello,
Been off for a while but would like some suggestions, please.
Got a question regarding speed of computer.
When I win a game of the OLD solitaire and the cards start to "peal" off, the speed is s-l-o-w,
BUT if I start moving the mouse in a rapid motion the card speed increases at least 2 or 3 times faster.

Anyone have any idea what causes this, AND can I change some setting to make things faster ALL the time?

Odds are you need to add some ram to your computer. Any idea of the amount you have? For the price of Ram right now for computers of your assumed vintage you'll be kicking yourself you didn't upgrade sooner.

It does, at least on the 5 PC's I've had.
As far as "RAM" upgrading can do wonders, but find out for sure the limit and the correct style before you order. For instance Win xp or 7 in 32 bit will hold much more ram (in the slots) than the processor can use ( believe it is 3mb), on a 64bit pc you can use much more RAM.

I think 32 bit XP will recognize a little over 3 GIG (not meg) of RAM. Some older machines only had 500 meg...you'll definitely notice a difference if you upgrade from that.

64 bit Win 7 will recognize more, but to realize the full potential you need 64 bit versions of your software too. Unless you're doing video editing or heavy-duty graphics it's probably not worth it.

Yep, ~3.5GB usable IIRC

64 bit Win 7 will recognize more, but to realize the full potential you need 64 bit versions of your software too. Unless you're doing video editing or heavy-duty graphics it's probably not worth it.

I think that if I were buying a new computer, I would go for 6GB of ram. I can use that now (only need 3GBish though) and it will certainly be needed down the road.

The operating system you are running for RAM is secondary. What matters is your motherboard and what type (SIMM, DIMM, DRAM, etc.) of RAM it accepts and what speeds and sizes it will accommodate. Many newer motherboards use RAM in multiples of two to get better performance. Mixing older, slower RAM with newer, faster RAM is a waste of money. All RAM on the motherboard should be of the same speed. As with all plastics, older motherboards do have a tendency to crack if you are not careful pulling RAM out and putting RAM in. If you have a brand name computer like Dell or HP you can go to crucial.com, put in your information on the computer brand and model number to see what may work and what type it accepts. If you have a locally built computer, your motherboard was probably made by one of the larger companies like Gigabyte, Intel, Asus, Biostar, etc. You can open up the case and get the motherboard brand and model off the board if you do not have a manual for the board. Be sure to discharge any static electricity before messing with your board.

Has it always performed this way?

You didn't mention what else may be running while you're playing etc...you can download apps for finding and fixing memory leaks...

open the device manager and find the running processes and see what "might" be hogging RAM....

for instance...if you are running anti virus software...try killing the process and see if it makes any difference (you can disconnect the Internet connection while your shields are down)

Norris, I don't know the answer to your question, but as a veteran of many games of solitaire with actual cards while in the US Navy, I never thought of terms used to describe the game. I don't think I ever knew the names until I looked it up. I've listed some questions below. If you scroll down the page, you'll find the answers.
