Need guidance on why my fuel gauge got scorched

Something totally unrelated to gauges but shares the ground circuit could be inoperative and contributed to the gauge failure. Study your diagram and don’t assume anything without testing. This may sound like nagging but it is to lead you to a solution nit a fix, the two aren’t interchangeable. I will check back periodically to help as much as I can.

smilinjak, you're not nagging and Rick, I understood what you were saying in your first response. I've been studying the wiring diagram and attempting to trace the corresponding wires on the tractor. What is/may be throwing me off is every other electrical item on the tractor works as it should.

I'm probably talking out of my rear end, but is there any chance the alternator could be putting out too much voltage? I'm reluctant to put in the new fusible link and start it until I'm pretty sure the underlying problem is resolved.

I had a few minutes this morning and rechecked the sender wiring. With the sender screwed to the tank, the gasket under it is not torn. When checking continuity of the ground lead, why do I get a continuity reading when I touch the fuel cap or certain spots of the tank? I assume the gasket is to prevent fuel from sloshing out, wouldn't it also electrically isolate the sender from the metal tank? I realize the more experienced people in the audience might be laughing at me, but me and electrical diagnosing don't get along very well. But I'm not giving up.

Never fear my friend those that are laughing at you are as lost as you are, those with the knowing smile have been just where you are. The gasket is a liquid seal. The screws that secure the sender to the tank are conductors completing the loop to ground. Don’t be concerned about that. Have you checked for continuity through your fusible link? If do so. Look for a red wire marked with an 05 metal tag, check to see if it could be or have been rubbing on black 05.
I will check back with you tomorrow.

OK, here's the plan. Feel free to criticize and make suggestions. I printed out a few copies of the wiring diagram and I'm going to use colored pencils to trace each branch of the ground circuit starting at the dash. I can then check for continuity and damaged wires within each branch. Does this make sense or did my butt just grow vocal chords?
Thanks for hanging in there.

Makes sense to me. I could be all wet, but I think a faulty ground forced the fuel sender signal wire to become the ground path. Which overloaded the circuit.

Good idea will be time well spent. When you know where you are going and where you have been you will figure out the cause

You may be on to something there Rick. Thanks for the assistance..

the only way the gauge will burn out is if there is a short on the fuel sender wire, or the fuel sender itself shorted out to ground!. there has to be a few ohms to ground to limit the current to the fuel gauge.. also, it's a poor design if the fuse going to the fuel gauge is way too big and allows enough current to burn out the fuel gauge!..
