I think you are testing too much with tunnel vision. If you think about it the temperature guage responds slowly as the temperature of the coolant increases, the fuel gauge responds quickly to the fuel level. The voltage to the fuel gauge sounds about right. It is not intended to be a voltage meter. The smell could be caused by the new insulation of the gauge internal wiring out gassing as it drys. Test less and drive more, life will be better for you.:2cents:

I hear ya, but I'm the poster child for paralysis by analysis and the sad part is I usually don't analyze correctly.:confused2::confused2:

hook them all up and go for drive long enough for the engine Temps to come up, check the upper and lower hose temp via your hand, once it warms up the top and bottom should be close. the gauges are dampened so they will not make sudden full swings.

That's the plan for next weekend after I flush the coolant...it's been too long since the last time.

I flushed the coolant and changed to a hotter thermostat. I didn't get a chance to work it too hard. If RickB is still following this I have a question. Should I have changed the spring that is in the thermostat housing on the early model 1920's? Thank you.

Thanks for your help Rick, it's always appreciated. On a side note, I have to commend you for the way you handled that individual on the "Saving a Ford 3910" thread. You exhibited way more class and patience than he deserved.

It sucks when a discussion deteriorates like that one did. I’ll share the blame for that. Nuff said, thanks for the thought.

Me again. Before this weeks snow, I chipped the last of this years brush, put the backhoe on and dug out one of three stumps that I want out. The fuel gauge is stuck on full and the temp gauge stayed on cold. I took the fuel gauge out and the winding on the voltage side of the gauge is dark.

A few observations:
the voltage coming out of the alternator is just over 14v.----seems normal; not excessive
the new fusible link is fine; not like the old one that was hanging on by a thread.
every other electrical function operates as it should; the only exception is the glow plug timer light, which doesn't go off after the 4 seconds as designed to. BUT the service manual states:
"If the timer relay malfunctions, it will adversely affect the indicator lamp, however the glow plugs will continue to function normally."

The manual didn't explain the function of the diode I circled in the wiring diagram. Does anyone know what the diode controls? Thank you.

Your boys haven’t been using the battery charger again have they? Don’t have a clue about the diode.

Nope, the battery is only 2 years old, no need for a charger. That was funny though.
