Need heat pump help again

Jim,
I'm not up on the price of propane anymore, but there's no way you'd ever convince me to use electric heat because of the cost around here.

see if you can locate a Goodman dealer in your area: i have had good luck with them and they don't use parts that are only available from them>

Brian a leak should be able to be found, What makes them zero in on the A coil? 15 years old is stretching it for a heat pump or actually any A/C UNIT. This is most certainly a judgement call. if we were closer i could give you some help.

Thanks Sigarm.
the reason I brought this up is that it was mentioned in a thread to replace the heat strips with a gas furnace. Those do not provide instant heat and the heatpump would blow refrigerated air during defrost cycles till the furnace came up to heat ??

I am replacing my old gashog propane furnace with a heat pump with a dual heat thermostat with outside temp sensor. Down to XX outside degrees the heat pump runs and below XX outside degrees the propane furnace runs. Still will have heat strips for the defrost cycle though.

Frank,

We tried locating the leak the other day. Checked everything from the air handler out to and including around the compressor. Nothing found. At that point, I decided that due to age, rusting... the heck with it, let's go new.

For the A coil, we didn't zero in on it. My post was regarding whether we could replace the heat pump and A coil or do I need to replace the entire heat exchanger (instead of just the A coil).

That would be my old man /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif.
When he started his business up I remember I was a little kid, but he attended a lot of courses in VA or WVA to learn how to calculate everything to do with the HVAC industry. I wish I had picked it up, be he kept me busy fabricating and installing, mostly commercial/industrial stuff, but he would do a house now and then. The last house he did was a million dollar home on the lake with 6 zones and 5 units.

He would never upgrade his style of doing things and would walk around the home with his two slides and notebook until the day he retired. That is, if the job wasn't engineered, but even then he would say, if I'm responsible for balancing this system, we need to make some changes.
