Thanks J.J. What would horsepower requirements be for your examples. I only have 22HP. Would this be enough to drive the pump in your scenario? thanks. memphismark

What RPM does your 22 HP motor operate at?

Do you have the valving, reservoir, filter etc. for this system?

I have a 20 GPM open center spool, 15 gallon reservoir, with 20 micron filter etc. V-Twin motor idles around 700 RPM, throttles up to 3200 RPM. Hope that helps. Thanks memphismark

Your 22 HP can turn a 11.3 GPM pump at 3000 psi.

What would be the effects of trying a bigger pump with same 22HP motor? Say 16 or 18 GPM pump? memphismark

17 GPM at 2000 psi using 22 HP.

Yes, what would the effects or different characteristics be between 11 and say 17 GPM with same 22 GPM?

Pump input HP = (GPM x PSI) / (1714 x efficiency) I typically use 1500 as te dividing which is around 85% efficiency.

Based on this with a fixed input HP as the flow (GPM) increase the PSI (pressure) must decrease. There are variable volume piston pumps that have HP controllers on them but these are expensive and may not operate at 3200 RPM.

Another possible option would be a Hi-Lo double pump system where you could have 16 GPM at 2000 PSI and 9 GPM @ 3500 PSI. This would require more valving and plumbing though.

Lower GPM will have more torque and higher will have more speed but less torque.
On an auger you probably need more torque to turn those blades.

You would run out of HP and the engine would stall.

17 GPM need 33.1 HP.
