Need help choosing new CUT

My only other suggestion: try hydrostatic. I have been thinking about it lately as I use mine. Gears are fine, but it is simply amazing how nice that hydro is. I can set my engine speed where I want it to match up for the pto and get my ground speed exactly right. This is especially nice on hills, I bet it is a real boon for snow removal (what ever THAT is!)

Can you go with gears - OF COURSE! But it doesnt cost to try out a hydro, and you may be really glad you did.

Mike, no I was not talking about Roy, I was asking Roy if he recalled one of the threads because I thought he might have been on line. But I seem to recall you participated in some of those threads. Am I correct in my recollection that people were essentially asked not to inject other brands into threads unless the original poster asked about them? It was not a mandate or a rule, but simply more of a polite thing to do.

Dargo obviously is referring to those posters as brand trolls. I was trying to be more polite. He was being more accurate.

As a new user, I would have found this forum much LESS useful if posters had not discussed many different brands of tractors even if uninvited. Having people point out specific differences in tractor features or capabilities or ownership considerations is not nearly as useful if examples are limited by this proposed self censorship rule. In particular this non brand specific buying/pricing/comparisons section should not have such a limitation. Limited cross pollination on brand specific forums can also be useful. On the other hand, I can see that regularly posting about Kubotas in the JD forum etc is annoying and impolite.

Some people are frustrated by what Dargo calls trolls but that specific practice (buy my tractor brand!) can be discouraged without limiting discussion. Even the "buy my tractor" statements can be useful to newbies. Rather than baiting the troller, it would be better to post a link to a prior discussion of the topic. Experienced users may well get bored with repeated posts exclaiming the virtues of a particular tractor but for new users these same posts are exactly what gets you thinking about what features and other considerations should go into making a choice.

Bob Skurka...
Your comment:
Roy, do you happen to recall a couple threads where people were asked to not inject brands that were not asked for?

From Ford850's original post:

"Partial to NH, but open to Kubota and JD due to dealer servicing strengths."

I'm not sure what you're talking about here, Bob... Suggest you re-read the posts.

As far as the thread you mention...no, I don't recall it but I don't read all threads.

Edit Sorry Bob, I should have read further down the thread before responding....thought you were talking about my Deere 990 suggestion.

I tried to remove my Kioti suggestion but too much time had elapsed so I appologise . If this is a fatal infraction the moderators should feel free to remove it.

But yes, hydrostats is another area that has improved since they first came out in the mid 80's

I have the geared 2615 and am very pleased with it. If I didn't have access to my dad's 72HP Ford 5900, I would have probably gone with something bigger (like the 4110), though. The size of the 4110 just seems like it would be a very versatile machine.

Bob,

I fail to see the harm in suggesting other brands, even when not asked for. Ford850 sounds like a smart guy that's doing his homework before purchasing a new CUT. I know when I was looking, I was hungry for any information that would make me a better informed buyer. From his post, it didn't sound like he was strictly loyal to any particular brand, but valued dealer service. If there is a good Mahindra dealer (and that's a big IF) in his area, I felt that the 4110 would be a good fit for the tasks he described.

If I were bashing other brands, I could see your problem with my post. I have no vested interest whatsoever in the brand that he eventually chooses. I was simply trying to be helpful. Please forgive me if it didn't come across that way.

Later,

BR

I did say I was partial to NH and open to Kubota and JD, but I also appreciate the gentle nudges to check out other brands that might fill my needs. I haven't looked into those others, but will now.
As far as the trollers and unwanted suggestions... who cares? I'm new to this site, but it seems like I see more wasted space discussing why others shouldn't be wasting space. I don't care if someone adds something I didn't ask for... I just ignore it and read the next reply. I do appreciate the concern to keep the board clean, but it might be better to ignore the unwanted remarks. Just my thoughts.
My 850 is a 1957. Runs good, but is not as dependable as a new tractor would be. Getting snowed in scares me.
I did find a front blade attachment listed on the NH site. Does Kubota, JD, or any others offer a large front blade for snow removal?
Thanks again for everyones help.

Island . . . In this case the poster asked about 3 specific brands and cited his reason that he could get good service. I am also partial to Steiner, Ventrac and Power Trac machines but as a courtesy to the poster I did not included those machines in anything I wrote.

Please bear in mind that if someone says "or other brands" or "what brands should I consider" then the whole ball game is wide open and every brand should be brought up. I do agree that sometimes there is more information to come out of a rambling thread than a closely defined one. But many folks do not have access to many brands. So when someone asks about specifics, we should be polite enough to give specifics. Also, many people will not travel 50 miles to a dealer while others will do that. So when he wrote his list of brands, it is certainly polite to stick with those.

And also bear in mind that we have "experienced users" who represent ALL the brands here at TBN. But you didn't see KiotiJohn, JerryG, or Varmintist come in and post about their brands did you? No. Again commonn courtesy. Those guys are a wealth of knowledge. If this would have been a question about an implement, a part, a repair, etc that was more general, they probably would have posted, offering some sort of a solution or their advice and it would have been very welcome.

Roy . . . sorry for the confusion, but no I was not referring to you as a problem at all. I wasn't sure which of the long time posters had been in some of the threads that discussed brand trolls. There were several and they talked about members leaving, brand trolls, etc and were under a couple different thread names. I didn't remember Chris (soundguy) participating in those, but I thought maybe you did and I was hoping to get a clarification.

Ford850:

It would sound like you know what you need and just have to look around till you sit on a tractor that says " take me home"

Both you and the tractor will know when the time comes.
