I mentioned the subsoil plow because if you have good organics in place with the topsoil just fracture it up to absorb some water. May not need to turn it over, depends on what you have. I found that subsoil plowing did a lot of good in ground similar to yours in MS.

My soil in my current locale allows water to drop through very fast, percolation isn't a problem in New Mexico.

Looks like I may hold off on a tractor for the moment. My uncle now tells me there's a walk behind tiller I could have that would probably work fine for the size of garden I want.

With that, I think I might be better served with a nice zero turn mower for up front and around the house. There is a tractor and cutter I can borrow the few times a year I need to cut the rear....

Well after looking a little closer at my place and discussing things with the wife I'm back looking at tractors. The wife's idea of a "small garden" was significantly bigger than mine, much bigger than I want to do with a walk behind tiller. That plus the state of the ground means I don't think I could ever reach top speed with a ZTR and some cleanup work that would go easier with a harley rake is pushing me towards tractor.

I'm looking at new again. I'm a good wrench but I just don't have time to repair things these days. I'm now thinking the 30-40HP range should suit me well, leaning towards the higher end of that range. I've got a Mahindra dealer with a good rep that I could nearly throw a rock and hit from my new house and Kubota/CaseIH, Massey/LS, Deere and Kubota/NH dealers with good reps within about 30 minutes drive. Suggestions?

I like having the dealer nearby. If you do not have time for repairs and maintenance dealer proximity should be important to you. In order to trailer your tractor to other dealers for service you will spend two hours per delivery, then pickup, on the road.

Mahindra enjoys a good reputation on T-B-N……maybe not as technically advanced as that of Deere or Kubota but good.

Mahindra's reputation is for relatively simple, minimal electronics, tractors.

I looked seriously at the Mahindra 5010 and it is a good tractor. Ultimately, it came in 3rd in my search as I narrowed the finalists down to the or LS XR4046 or the Kioti DK50SE.

The Mahindra price came in below Deere and Kubota (L4740), and above LS and Kioti.

You might want to take a look at the 4010 or maybe the 4035, which is a little beast of a tractor.

Stopped by the Mahindra dealer on my way home from work yesterday and looked around. 4035 looks like a boss but I think it might be a little big for what I need. I'm liking the looks of the 3616 at this point. Sizewise it just seems to fit the size and configuration of my property.
