The nut never made it to the nylon part of the nut. My problem now is that I am having a hard time locating a die. I did locate a thread chaser on a website that was reasonably priced, but don't know if that will do what needs to be done. The thread chaser is about $18, including shipping. I have no idea what a die will cost, but I hate the thought of spending a lot on something that I will never use again.

Might try taking it to a machine shop, they can fix it for you.

Do you have or can you find some non-locking nuts for it? If so, does the non-locking nut run all the way down ...even with a lot of effort ...if so, do this a few times, each time with a new nut ...that may chase the threads for you sufficiently, for less than $18 ...BTW what is the size of the nut?

I had already tried a non locking nut and it also was too tight to spin on the shaft, and trying to force it wasn't going to work, since there is nothing to grab hold of. When I originally held the shaft with the pipe wrench, even that wasn't enough to get the nut on, so it left me with nothing else to believe that the shaft wasn't threaded properly. I called a friend that works in a machine shop, and he located a die for me this afternoon. It took about a half hour to re-thread the shaft, taking off only a little at a time, until the nut went on properly. Now, it isn't loose at all, but it isn't so tight that you can't get the nut to thread on up to the nylon section. In the process of carrying the nut around trying to find a thread chaser or die, I seemed to have lost it somehow. In the morning I am off to the industrial supplier to get a replacement and then to finish putting the lift together. Thanks to everyone for the suggestions.

Your going to love having a lift in your shop. I dont have a drive on lift, just a two post Rotary lift and I've had several odd things on my lift. I put/had my 4-wheeler, motorcycle, ZT mower, cars and trucks on my lift. The only thing that I wont put on mine, is my tractor. A lift will make life awhole lot better for you and your friends/family. By the way.....look in the washer or dryer in the house for that nut (LOL). Thats were my wife finds things for me. My tractor key has been washed more times than I can remember...lol.

The only thing that my wife never admits to finding in the laundry is money.... well, actually she gives me the change back. :D That is another stubborn nut, but I don't think that anyone can help me with that one... :D

Around our house, he who finds the money in the laundry gets to keep it, fair and square. I ALWAYS check my pockets before they hit the basket, but the ladies in this house fail often to check. Makes a mess when it is an ink pen, and I am usually the one paying for the clothes, so at least I get some return on my money.
If they find a bolt or nut, it ends up on the top of the machine.
