It's been so long since I got out of school, I can't remember how to solve this problem.
I can't even remember if its geometry, trigonometry or whatever. Maybe its early Alzheimer's?
Please help me find out how many square feet this is.

I usually Google it. There are lots of online calculators. I can't remember either.

Looked it up. It a side (30') plus b side (10') divided by 2 times the height. We don't know height and there's not enough info to determine.

It's 520 sq. ft. The distance between the 2 parallel pieces is the sq. rt of 24x24 + 10x10 = 26 (Pythagorean theory). Then 26x10 (2 triangles) + 26x10 (rectangle).

Two rt angle triangles plus a rectangle in between.

I used to know all that stuff (always got A's) but got into a profession where it never got used (I still did a lot of algebra though). Decades later I now do a lot of woodworking and wished I could revive the geometry/trig.

Maybe my numbers are wrong but I get 480 sq ft. I do simple math. 30 x 24 =720. 24 x 10 (the two right triangle together) = 240. 720 - 240 =480 AM I wrong????

Ralph, you are correct if the sides are parallel and the right triangles are equal. Well now that I think about it not sure that have to be equal.

your answer is 420square feet.

This is fun. I'm anxiously awaiting the debate toward the end result, which is of course, the correct answer.

So far we have 4 different answers. :D

About 1/100 acre, in round numbers. :)

I thank everyone for their help. I was getting so many different answers I had to try to figure it out without using math. I drew it on a piece of paper, cut out the 2 sides, placed them together into a square and measured it.
My answer is 440 square feet.

I hope I am right because I am figuring out how much concrete I need to pour my driveway apron.

That sounds right to me.

And for some strange reason, when I saw this I had concrete in mind. Go figure..... :)

The distance between the two straight lines is 21.8 sqrt (24^2 - 10^2). So 21.8 x 20 = 438.

I'd go with 480 for concrete, I'd rather leave some on the truck than be short.

You're close enough! Dieselcrawer is dead on - 436.35 sq. ft. Your 22' dimension is actual 21.8 feet.

So far I'm thinking Greg and Eric are the closest. Anxious to hear their mathematical method of getting that answer. :)

u got a rect 10x whatever. u got 2 rt triangles10x24 x whatever. solve triangle for whatever and u got it. 100 + whatever^2 = 24^2
