Square or rectangular tube would make the grapple you are looking at easier to make. I used round because that's what I had. I doubt if it would make any difference in this application.

" If you look how some companies attach to the sides of the bucket i'm wondering if you think this may be an advantage strength wise."
I think there are 2 advantages to the side mount. The sides of the bucket are aligned to provide strength in shear rather than bending which is an improvement, plus the side mounts are at a radius from th e pivot point closer to the tips of the grapple to reduce the bending moment transferred to the bucket mount.
Also, the widest possible bolt pattern for the side mount will be strongest.
Hope that makes sense.

Usually square tubing is much stronger for a given tube size and wall thickness.

These guys Virnig make nice looking ones. If you look at the endplates, there is only one bolt that goes through the square tube to attach to the endplate. So, two bolts and hoses and it's off. And, all you would need for your forks is two more endplates. JackIL originally posted the link and I've been saving it to build my own (someday).

Dale the single bolt mounting on that grapple is very interesting. We originally though about using the round tube mount but you guys just about have me convinced to use square instead.

Square tube has merits as far as being easier to work with and I'm now considering that saddle type mount that you sent me a link to. Also going to take a real good look at our pallet forks and possibly consider this as a multi-function grapple. If we change our plans now before we start running bead maybe we can kill two birds with one stone. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Thanks for all the suggestions so far guys, please keep them coming.

What will be the main thing that you will use the grappler for? I got to say that a side mount would be stronger.

Deerlope the bucket grapple will mainly be used for clearing downed trees on our surrounding property. We borrowed one a couple of weeks back and did more work in the couple of days that we had it than we could have done in a week without it. Unfortunately John, the neighbor that lent it to me wasn't giving it up for good without a fist fight. Think we would have lost that fight! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I figure it will be a nice addition to the TC-40D package.

I have done a lot of welding and steel fab work and it does not matter a whole lot how you mount it. The fel is always subject to a lot of side strain so the grapple would be also. Whatever is eaiser for you to do I guess is what matters.
