Personally, I prefer Rocky's. They make all kinds of boots, for about anything you want a boot for. My current favorite pair has an expanded toe box that looks a little odd but is incredibly comfortable. The main store in Nelsonville, Ohio sells stuff other than boots -- outdoor, camping, hunting, work gear -- and has people come from hundreds of miles away. My favorite outdoor gear store sells Rocky as their main line of boots. I think you can readily find them with a search engine as Rocky Boots. Well worth checking out.

As a professional bird dog trainer I log a bunch of miles every year. I've tried most leather boots, they just don't cut it for me. The big reason I don't like the leather boots is because eventually they lost their waterproofing. I wear LaCrosse rubber boots, insulated in the winter and uninsulated Grangers in the summer. They are light, relatively inexpensive and waterproof.

Red Wings are still good, IMHO. I bought a pair about a year ago for horse work and have been completely happy with them. Most of them are still made in the USA (though a few years ago that was ALL). I have also found that the US Army-issue combat boots are generally very well made and comfortable, though that may be coincidence that my feet are the right shape for them. They are made in the US by a couple different contractors, e.g. Belleville Shoe of Belleville Illinois, and are usually in the same price range as quality civilian boots.

Thanks for the info guys. I went today and get a pair of Red Wing Pecos(slip on type) that are suppose to be waterproof. I did get another pair of insoles that I felt more comfortable in. I sure hope these hold up. I guess I'll have to wait a few weeks to see.

A related question... Has anyone found an XXW boot that they like? About the only boot I can find to fit me is Redwings in H width (that's 4E!). Other boots that list XW widths don't even come close. The Redwings are great, but they have gotten to where they are over $200 a pair.

Anyone else have this problem?... and if so, have you found anything reasonably priced that has these extreme widths?

I really hope you can't judge the "hold-up-ness" of the Red Wings in a few weeks.....just the comfort. Let us know in 5 or 6 years......

The latest pair of boots I have bought are the Timberline Pro in a standard wide size. These are wider than most other brands that claim to have a wide. When I bought custom boots I wore a 4D or 3E if memmory serves me. Now I just shop for a brand that runs wide in the normal sizes and try thier wide sizes. Even when looking at Timberline some of thier models were too narrow. I got the "Men's Waterproof 6 in. 200g Soft Toe Wheat, Style #65030, $105.00 MSRP" Timberland link

Not quite as wide as a pair of Rocky felt pacs I have but the most comfortable boot I have bought including Iron Age, Red Wing, Herman Survivors, K-Mart, Wal-Mart...etc. Break-in was very short and not at all bad.

And the price was right about $80.00 at Tractor Supply.

The other end of the boot size spectrum is small. Do people realize hoe hard it is to find quality footwear in small sizes?
