Needed CDL?

   / Needed CDL? #32
Here is a section from the Michigan web site.
? This only speaks to tie-down requirements, not to CDL requirements vs. Vehicle GCWR. And the sections themselves only discuss transport of individual vehicles over and under 10k lbs. A Hitachi excavator, for example, must be tied down by 4 individual chains vs. a Kubota mini-ex that only needs 2 individual chains.

Not sure of the relevance, unless I'm missing something.

I have read many threads about truck and trailer options where people warn of going over 26k truck and 10K trailer would require getting a CDL license. But you only need a CDL if you use your truck for comercial reasons.

Not always. For example, let's say you are towing a race car trailer over 10K combination over 26K and get pulled over. If you admit that you entered the car in a race/contest and won $50 and a trophy, you're in violation. Anytime you are making some sort of income, it's considered different than private.

if this was not true you would need to carry a DOT medical certificate every time your combined truck trailer weight was over 10K. All the private owner needs to do is not overload your truck/trailer and legally you should be fine. these are federal regs so they should not vary from state to state.

Med cards in PA are required for trucks with a GVWR of 17K interstate commerce. If you are commercial and have a truck as small as an F-150 and as little as a 7K trailer AND you cross state lines, you must have a med card.

Yep, I grabbed the wrong thread. I meant to put in the tie up a bx 24. Anyway, here in Mich is much like the others, 26,000# and up for commercial is CDL territory. But there is an exemption for personal use so I could have a big ol mack and a 53 footer for personal use. The following is from the Mich CDL manual

Are There CDL Exemptions?
The following people do NOT need a Commercial Driver License (CDL):
ACTIVE DUTY MILITARY: Operating military vehicles with military licenses (includes National Guard).
POLICE AND FIREFIGHTERS: Operating authorized emergency vehicles.
FARMERS: Operating vehicles within a 150 mile radius of their farm.
An F-endorsement is needed by farmers operating combination vehicles whose towing vehicle has a
GVWR of 26,001 pounds or more. A knowledge test, but no skills test, is required to obtain the Fendorsement.
The F-endorsement is NOT a CDL.
Farmers who carry hazardous materials in amounts requiring placards while operating combination
vehicles whose towing vehicle has a GVWR of 26,001 pounds or more, or a single vehicle with a GVWR
of 26,001 pounds or more, need a CDL with a hazardous materials endorsement.
INDIVIDUALS: Operating motor homes or other vehicles used exclusively to transport personal possessions
or family members, for non-business purposes.
