Apparently they did not move in as a couple. The girl and the dogs were there for a few months. The guy/finance moved in over last weekend. It was the guy that lost control of the dogs while bringing them in from the yard. Don't know the date of the letter may find out at the town counsel meeting on Thursday.

As for banning, I don't believe in banning anything. I'll keep my guns because I know if dangerous dogs are banned there will still be dangerous "illegal" dogs around owned by lawbreakers. Same reason to not ban guns.

Because of this incident I have met a lot of my neighbors. Went to dinner Friday nite with my wife's cousins, like we do most every Friday nite, seems that a lot of people watch the local news. Nothing but thanks from neighbors so far no one has questioned my actions no complainers or second guessers.

Good to hear the neighbor is doing better.
I have heard that many of the so called "aggressive" breeds can be exceptionally sweet and loyal.
HOWEVER, I believe that every dog owner of perhaps the top 10 list of aggressive breeds (and crosses) should be required to attend, and pass a state accredited obedience course with the dogs. I don't care if the owners teach the obedience lessons, both the dog and owner still needs to be certified competent by an independent examiner.
And, perhaps even add refresher courses.
And, if they can't pass the obedience classes, either the dog should be adopted by someone who is "competent", or it should be put down.
Any dog should know and obey simple commands such as coming when it is called (apparently these dogs got loose and ran), and I've seen other put bulls (I think) that the owner would have to chase whenever it got loose. That is plain irresponsible.
What about logging direct contact with the dogs (walking, games, etc) for at least a minimum of 2 hours a day for puppies, and 1 hour a day for adults.

Agreed. This is not a case where the op put the dogs down because of a possible or imminent threat. The neighbor was actually being attacked. Can't second guess that. Good job Tim. I don't know what I would have done. I don't have any guns and if I did I couldn't carry because of our great Canadian laws.

One of the best places for young puppies (once given shots) of ALL breeds to visit is a good dog park often. They get to socialize with other people and other dogs.
My heeler is a love bug outside of her truck, her lawn, her barn or her garden. She expects to see people and dogs there, but inside her territory is hers. She doesn't bite people, just barks a lot. Heaven help the deer, cats and varmints though. I socialized her a lot when young and still do.

I have seen that dobermans were on someone's list of aggressive or bully or violent or sadistic or whatever dogs. I had dobies for eleven years. Mine were not mean, not too aggressive but did give ya that sense that if someone overstepped their boundary on our place that they would protect it. I've always had blue heelers since a teenager and they are more agressive than my dobies were.

I wish I had seen where they gave a concealed carry guy credit for saving someones life but that is how the media is we know what went down and what the story is.
I also hope your town meetings are productive. The ones we are having about banning certain breeds inside city limits is similar to how this thread has gone-both sides vehemently defending their position. Its going to be a tough row to hoe for all of us hopefully a workable solution will come out of all of it. good luck

Tim, that's great news about your neighbor. He has a long road of physical and mental healing ahead. Do you know of any test results for rabies? I think it takes about 2-weeks to get results on that test. I suspect the dogs were not rabid, but you just never know.
It will be interesting to see what comes out of that town board meeting. Like this thread, you'll likely find that when politics enters the discussion, everything from gun control to back yard dog breeding may come up for discussion. People tend to see and hear their favorite agendas. I'm extremely pleased to see how you've stayed on topic and continue to keep the important issues in focus: the attack on your neighbor and your response based on sound judgement. As long as you stick to those topics, I think you'll have 100% support.
