I hope his insurance company does a lot of the heavy lifting in recovering damages from the dog owner. The neighbor may do well to contact a lawyer of his own, although his recovery comes first, of course.

If you had saved the dogs and could identify them, no doubt after such a vicious attack, the sheriff and local vet would have put the dogs down. Perhaps it is easiest to just do it quickly. And, I can't imagine there is any doubt in anybody's mind that your actions were anything other than defense of yourself and your neighbor.

We all wish for a speedy recovery.

After living in the City of Mayor Bloomberg for so long I guess in the back of my mind I was anticipating some kind negative comments or backlash. I know if I still lived there and had used a handgun on my neighbors property, in violation of my premises permit, I would have been wearing handcuffs, lost my gun, forfeited my permit, been suspended from my job and be seeking the advise of counsel.

NYC does not represent most of the country. It's a shame that people are forced into that mindset. Here in Ohio, the law (and law enforcement) would have totally supported your actions. The only comment you would have gotten from a cop was "well done."

But now that you explained your background, we better understand your worries.
