Neighbor called the Law on me for shooting

The following is a true story, no names are mentioned. I had a Friend that when someone did him wrong, would simply take these measures. He would get a couple dozen fiddler crabs, go to the person's home, under the primise of "Letting bye-gones be gones". After being invited in, he would sit on the couch, ask to go to the bathroom, and release the fiddler crabs in these locations. BTW, they will find a hiding place and die. BOY, does that STINK. I am not advocating that you do the same, but this is one form of "Mountain Justice".

Partly my fault for not knowing the rights/laws where I live about ID's. I was hesitant and did question it, but I do feel I was cooperative. Maybe I am worrying about that part too much. I just don't feel him needing my ID was necessary. I was on MY property. My address is clearly marked on my mailbox. There would not have been any question as to if he were at the right house.

Playing nice is out the window. As appealing as a silencer would be, that is the opposite of what I want. I need a louder gun:laughing: Maybe I'll fire off the cannon a few times tonight with bread stuffed down the barrel to feed the birds and fish:laughing:

At any given time there may be three or four adult males on my property who are not me, so being on my property doesn't mean anything to an officer. I only carry an ID when necessary, but don't want to create a situation where none exists and don't care to be known as a contrary old (fill in the blank); right or wrong, it can cause you more problems than it's worth.

Not sure about the carried in for no id thing, so i wont comment on that.

But i never said i was going to give a false name, just nothing.

But i guess it does not matter they can look up who you are just by acknowledging that its your property and your the owner, its all in the county records anyway?

I didn't think you were, just making a general comment on what law enforcement deals with. Laws vary and it gets kind of confusing for everyone. Circumstances are not always clear cut or my be misinterpreted or misunderstood by the officer or person being questioned. Hiibel v. Sixth Judicial District Court of Nevada, Humbolt County addressed this, but it is not all inclusive.

If an officer investigated a report of shooting at a residence, did not do due diligence in the investigation and they later found there had been an Adam Lanza situation or violence of some sort everyone would want the officer crucified; not enough money printed to get me to do their job.

The "report" may not have been a criminal "report" but rather the officer's log of activity. He responded to a call (aka was dispatched) and will have to have record of HIS activity for his supervisor. Plus if the "incident" with the neighbor escalated for some reason, the officer would need record of his response. I doubt the report is much more than that. An officer isn't going to create more paperwork than necessary. I have several friends in law enforcement, I KNOW those guys aren't going to o more paperwork than they have to.

I think getting caught up in a dispute over the ID is a red herring. That's not the problem no matter how put out you are that the officer asked for your ID. I think it is the officer's prerogative to check IDs. I would surely mention that the neighbor's harassment was wearing thin and "upholding the law" means protecting my rights as much as his when I am doing nothing wrong and nothing to encourage his harassment. I'd leave it at that and thank the officer for his performance of duty and aid in keeping the peace. Just get a copy of his report for now.

I'm from the city and really enjoy shooting myself. All the years of being shot at really grew on me! I used to live in NY now in Ct where it's impossible to own a gun let alone protect yourself

Sounds like you need to protect your garden from animals using a propane cannon set to go off at irregular intervals.:D

Best is just ignore them folks.:)

Not saying either one of you are right as the fact of the matter is, you have to live next to one another. Sometimes its best to try to discuss things amongst yourselves. Perhaps there's another reason he's concerned?
Regardless of the reasons, ya'll have to live next to one another.

I have the same trouble only with a new neighbor who shoots randomly off his back porch, trouble is, he only owns 1.69 acres, with houses on both sides, and utility trailers behind his home, he shoots .223 and .45's. I have mentioned it to him casually, by breaking the ice on other subjects. He can walk a half mile in 4 directions and shoot any which way he wants..
I'll put my best foot forward and then some, before I do a 3 day rug smolder, which I hope it doesn't come too.

What time were you shooting? Like others, I recommend the silencer. You can put it on most any gun with planning.

OTOH, you might want to start planning a pig farm between the pond and their fence.

Ironically tonite on the 10:00Pm new was a "feature piece" of an interview with a neighbor concerned about another neighbor that "shoots too much" He is apparently some distance from this neighbor, but the "noise echos up these hollows". And there is the riding horse ranch only 1/2 mile from this "bad" neighbors property and there are concerns for the children. Some of the neighbors have heard full automatic weapons and high powered rifles, and some of those high powered rifles have a range of over 2 miles. etc etc etc. No-one said any bullets have fell on their property, they just don't like the noise and are "concerned". This area of this particular county is by far the less populated area of that county. But they sent a news crew. Investigated the background of the perpetrator, including his application for a shooting range with the county planning and zoning, which was rejected when all of the neighbors gathered together at the planning and zoning meeting and opposed it. The commercial CCW range is now supposed to be constructed in the next county to the west. The "bad neighbors" statement (according to the reporter) was that what shooting goes on there now is his personal practice. He was not interviewed or filmed. The news reporter obviously had a bias against the "shooter" as they always do. All news people are all anti gun, anti CCW, Anti personal protection. At least all that I have seen or met. So if you find yourself with a "news team" on your doorstep don't be surprised.
