My wife decided to take a vacation day and stay home from work last Thursday. While she was home, a van with two guys in it came down the lane and eventually turned around and left. The next day, one of my neighbors called and told me that his house was broken into the day before. He said that they must have been there for quite a while and that they took a lot.

Obviously, I told him every bit of information that my wife could remember but it's got me thinking that it's time for us to invest in some type of security system. I've read some of the older posts on TBN about this kind of thing and wanted to mention my specific situation and see if anyone had any thoughts or suggestions.

Our driveway is about 300 yards long and the house/barn are completely invisible from the road. There is a fence about halfway down the driveway. I'm kind of leaning towards putting a gate up with an automatic opener and a lock on it and maybe an outdoor camera mounted on one of the fence posts. I would think that a gate with a camera watching the driveway would scare most of these guys away. What do you guys think?

We don't have a home phone so I'm not sure if an ADT type service would be a possibility for us.

Is there anything else out there that I should take a look at? Any responses/opinions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

One way is to make sure that you are not advertising that you're on vacation. This means halt the morning newspaper deliveries. I wouldn't notify the police that you are gone either as in at least one instance they posted that info on the board behind the booking officer.
a fake camera or housing will do the job as well as a real one and is far cheaper.
I have a rubber visitor announcer hose on the driveway and it's visible from the road. Casual tourists don't chance it.

Alarm System: I do not have a land line phone but have phone service via internet and have ADT alarms that works on that system. We are in a fringe area for cell phone service so I have cell booster system that brings the calls in and out via the internet service. Depending on what you want to spend ADT and your cell provider can fix you up with just about any system sophisicationyou want. CCTV systems are getting pretty cost effective, I am looking at them. You want a recorder that is motion activated and will archive for as long as you think you may be away at a time.

Something like this ought to take care of the problem. Cantilever gate with opener, telephone access control, CCTV and IR illuminator.

Had a situation like yours a couple of years ago. They caught the SOB who robbed our neighbor because had turned his truck around in front of our gate. Got nice pictures of him, his truck, and the stolen merchandise in the bed.

I have the lorex wireless system, 7' tall gates and a dozen angry geese that are trained to attack everyone except me...I even have to send in my utility readings after they chased off the summer help.

Although geese don't sound very scary they are good watchdogs. I have been thoroughly beat up by some "guard geese". I won't mess with them.

If you guys recall CompactTractorFan's thread about chasing geese with his little Kubota...well, I reckon he's lucky he wasn't attacked by those geese!!

But, how do you train geese to be "guard geese"?

They qualify as experts as soon as they move in, since they are as nosy and obnoxious as some new yorkers.

After they nest, it theirs FOREVER.:eek::eek:

Here is a good way to prevent unwanted company. Most burglars do not want to deal with a large aggressive dog.You would be surprised how visitors turn and leave when he greets them.

I trained mine by me being the only person who ever fed them from chicks and by having my buddy steal a couple eggs from them, they really hate people now, not that they needed much help being aggressive. I'm not talking wimpy ones here, I have a Chinese/Embdien crossbreed...as a bonus they keep migrating canadian geese, rabbits and deer out of the yard. On the downside they see everything as a potential target, last time it was windy a chunk of foam blew into the yard and they tore it to shreads and made a real mess.
