Neighbor got robbed...time for a security system

The opener is made by Viking Access systems. One of the photos shows it with the cover off. These things are setup up for radio control, exit loops, safety eyes, box control. It's rated to open and close that 1100 pound gate continually for years.

A telephone access controller is the way to go. It's better and safer than just a plain old keypad. Let's say a delivery person shows up at the gate. They press your number on the box, then it calls you on whatever phone you want. Mine is set up for my cell. You talk to the guy at the gate and if you want them in you can open it from the phone. So the benefit is you don't have to give your pass code to the pizza guy, and you can let someone in from anywhere with your cell.

Years ago we had a deputy come talk to us at work. He said a dog was the best deterrent.

We live 1,200 ft. off the road and house isn't visible from road as the land is covered with timber. It appears to potential crooks that there is only one way in and out, which may help.

Lived here 19 years, so far no problems.

Although geese don't sound very scary they are good watchdogs. I have been thoroughly beat up by some "guard geese". I won't mess with them.

LOL,
When I was Army-PATRIOT missile, the entire IRP (Initial Readiness Position) perimeter was guarded by Geese :) One of the jobs we had has guards was to feed them, clean them and remove the eggs. Had lots of geese eggs for breakfast:) ANyway-they are great guards-but can be a pain to take care of.

A dog is the best deterrent but it needs to be supplimented with a good surveillance sytem. The bottom line is if they want what we got bad enough-they will get it. Make sure you got backups and or good insurance.

While I am from and now reside Rural I worked for the Philadelphia Fire Department for a few years. While there in "nice" neighborhood I was robbed 2 times in one week. They came back. I got 2 wireless/ wired IP cameras and placed one outside the front door monitoring the driveway and one in the living room. It was obvious to anyone outside there was a camera outside from the blinking green light on it. They also panned from side to side, up and down. I'd be at work on my smart phone looking at my house. Pretty neat. They were $88 a piece.

Then one day they paid off. Someone decided the log splitter I borrowed that was chained to a fence and large tree out front was their's. Well, needless to say i have a video of there faces, license plate #, and the theft. They were arrested a day later, log splitter returned, and all is well. After that I placed a "Smile your on camera sign" on my property and had no issues after.

For you guys with gates, how do you handle UPS and package deliveries when no one is home?

thanks,

Tony

In my case, they call my cell via the gate controller so I can open it for them to put the package inside the perimeter. Also, sometimes leave a message with the shipping directions for them to just leave it at the control box. My favorite option is to just pick up the package at their local office as inside the gate we have a pack of Catahoula Leopard dogs always on duty that have been known to treat packages like unwanted visitors.

Schedule another time when you will be there to receive it or a time when you can go there to pick it up.

Our home cannot be seen from the main road. A fence surrounds the house with "Warning Dog" signs posted. If my two outside dogs don't get the intruders, my neighbors would call me and they would intervene after calling the police while I am on the way. Knock on wood--no problems all these years. If I spot something suspicious when I am coming or going, I make my presence and my intentions quite clear. As far as the delivery question is concerned, there is a 3/5 foot plastic container outside the gate with a sign attached stating that packages or boxes are to deposited inside. My outside dogs are trained to not receive food or water from anyone except me, my Wife or Son. They love our grandchildren, are people friendly if you are invited, but I really wouldn't want to take the chance if I were not invited and had ill intentions. Australian Sheep dogs possess great stealth capabilities and will be on top of you without warning and there is not much you can do to prevent the attack. Enough said. Good Luck in your endeavor.

I deliver the mail in my local area and there are about a dozen properties with security gates. For most of them I have their gate code. But then I have been on this run for about 10 years and know most of them so they are happy to let me have the code.

Dogs are a deterrent BUT most of them will lick me to death. Of the 600+ places on the mail run most have at least one dog and at 90% of places there is no-one at home. (in town working) The dog comes out barking its fool head off, checks me out, pisses on the wheel, brushes against me, then goes away. At the next place the dog sniffs around to see who I've been to see, puts his scent on me and goes away. If you know what the dog is doing, and why, you have no problems. I am not an animal person, in fact I ignore them. No-one has geese :)
