Neighbor got robbed...time for a security system

there are a variety of system recorders.

i do warn how ever, stay away from ebay. a lot of scams, and / or junk stuff that was hacked and relabeled. and folks trying to make a quick buck.

X10.com - Security Cameras, X10 Home Security, Wireless Camera, Home Automation, Electronics and More! also stay away from. junk stuff that is not made to last.

if ya go wit a descent security digital video recorder. most of them should have much better motion / light detection. than generic motion sensors. and like. some of them may already be setup to give you a call when something happens.

larger security panels that tie into open doors, open window alarms, and like. more likely also have a call a phone number option, or send text message or some such.

having a couple security companies come out and go over things would be a big plus. and can help ya identify areas for good video camera placements, and sensors and like.

i have encountered various problems myself, in placement and forced me to move some cameras around.

i really do not trust wireless for security and preferred wired. it can be pretty easy at times to pickup wireless singles on a laptop by just driving down the road.

For you guys with gates, how do you handle UPS and package deliveries when no one is home?

thanks,

Tony

I have a large plastic tote at the front gate for UPS, there is a camera there so they don't mind leaving packages in it.

If they REALLY want in it does not matter what you do. Dogs are easy just a little pepper spray and they will go away. Gates fence cameras all are easy to someone who really wants in. Best any of the do is keep an honest man honest

If you guys recall CompactTractorFan's thread about chasing geese with his little Kubota...well, I reckon he's lucky he wasn't attacked by those geese!!

But, how do you train geese to be "guard geese"?

Ahhh...yes...You will never let me forget that...:confused3:

I read through all the replies before typing this. I too live in a rural area and several places nearby have been broken into. My solution involves a couple of things. I use both active and passive security measures.

Active measures include a couple of dogs in the house and a couple of geese and a goat that have free range of the property. Ever get butted in the shins by a pygmy goat that is not de-horned?

As for passive things. I have a driveway alert that signals in the house. Only good if someone is home to look out the window but it also alerts the dogs. I have a security camera given to me by a friend who does physical security for Motorola this camera is made by Axis and is an IP internet based camera. All video is dumped to a server in my basement which has software to detect motion and to send me via text message or e-mail video or still images of what it captures.

Another active measure I take is to make sure I am carrying my handgun on my hip anytime I am home. You'd be surprised how fast it gets around town that Joe up the street is always carrying a weapon so don't mess with that house. Neighbor kid is a local troublemaker with the police being at that house almost every weekend. He used to be pretty mouthy to me until I was riding the tractor by the front of the property one day with my gun on my hip and I made a point of getting off and doing something so that he could see the gun. Never a problem with him since.
