Neighbor lets dogs out to do their business in my yard?

Leaving out food that a dog will over eat on and poo or puke up in your neighbor's home isn't torturing the dog. Dogs don't mind puking stuff up, sometimes it's just an opportunity to eat them again. Just be a good neighbor and let them know their dogs are eating your almond organic fertilizer and might get sick from it.

Good posts thus far. I had this problem at my last house. Your neighbor knows the dogs are pooping in your yard. Part of responsible pet ownership is cleaning up your dog's poop. If there is no poop in their own yard, they know it is probably in your yard, plus surely they watch the dogs trot over the line when they are let out.

My solution was to shovel the poop back across the line, being careful to pile it as high as possible so it couldn't be missed. Eventually the problem stopped, as the message was clear. Your neighbor may be an insensitive jerk and not react. In that case, bring on the nasty stuff for the dogs to roll in.

Had this problem. Not neighbors, someone walking dog before dawn. Couldnt figure out who. Got restaurant size ground red chili powder shaker. Sprinkled on border of lawn and on dogs favorite locations. Stopped problem immediately.

Fix the problem with the neighbors and leave punishing and torturing the dog out of it.

firstly, for so many reasons, THIS ^^

i can't believe some of the suggestions that i have read here! yes i put a lot of time into training my dog and yes i take keeping a dog very seriously but if i didn't, it surely wouldn't be her fault.

i cannot even begin the imagine the number of ways in which i would ruin the life of someone who messed with my dog.

i agree with the OP that he should not have to bear the burden or cost of fencing, but some of the "advice" here could end up costing him MUCH more.

this sounds reasonable. (s)he'll smell that from a mile away and can't possible want to traverse it when nature calls.

Not to hi-jack...
I'm following this closely. Same thing with my neighbors too, but to top it off the dog steals anything and everything she can reach. Rips open garbage/recycling bags. I've talked to them twice, animal control is useless. I wish people would train their dogs.

I did have a situation with neighbor's dog coming into my yard at night. Since their dog was a male and I had breedable dogs there is no way that is going to happen. So I called the neighbor and said that I was trying to figure out whose dog this was and of course he denied it was his. I never accused him.

So I said, that's too bad since you know how much I love dogs and I sure hate to call the dogcatcher on this but I cannot allow my dogs to be bred. That is, unless someone pays me enough. Anyway, he again denied it was his dog but the problem stopped immediately. My other neighbor said he tied the dog up better.

I now have a good relationship with that neighbor and the problem was fixed. Had he not fixed things I would have called the dog catcher and got the dog to come into my garage.

I think I can actually create a contract, prospectively, by sending a certified letter to them (I know who they are and where they live), offering the use of my yard for dog feces deposits, at a cost of $100 per visit. Stating that they can accept my offer by using the yard.

Then take pictures. Because NOW I've got offer & acceptance, and that's enforceable in court.

The alternative is to post a sign on my yard, "Dog Poop, You Pay $100 Per Visit, Place Cash In Slot." (You'd need to bolt something* with a slot in it nearby, and I'd make the sign bilingual.) Run a surveillance camera and a hard drive, so you'll have pics for the small claims action.

Then they can pay for the fence in my yard...

I have enough sense not to put myself in jeopardy in any manner, and seriously, I would never harm anyones pet. I have a dog of my own, and the more I get to know people it seems in this day and age, the more I love my dog.
Besides, I have always felt, "you mess with my dog, you mess with me", and pretty sure others feel the same way..

But I understand the old way of thinking in the country, I'm just not that guy.. I see more of an opportunity.. whether for money, or for funny... LOL

This actually puts you at a greater risk because you are now in a contractual obligation to perform. Stay away from all this certified letter and conflict stuff since that merely raises the stakes. This is not your problem and it's not the dog's problem. It's the dog owner's problem and that's the entire story. Either he fixes it or call the dogcatcher. If those ideas don't work, we can talk again.

You know, attack the dog or owner and you could wind up spending the night on a concrete floor in the corner of a cell with eight of your new best friends. The judge will see you in the morning, set a court date where you will be fined maybe $265 and your mug shot in an orange jumpsuit will be all over the net. You will be ordered to stay away from your neighbor which you will want to do anyway since he is contemplating civil charges against you. I have seen this happen. Please re-read my two earlier posts since I have seen a number of these situations.
