I have some steep slopes. I find that backing up in 4WD without FEL and with belly mower allows me to get all the way up without ever feeling unstable.
I also find that (even with a FEL on) using a 7ft bush hog, I can can back up a very steep slope and feel more comfortable doing it than I can going forward up it in many cases. I think part of it is concern about starting to spin and what you do when you can't go further. For sure the comfort comes largely from being able to simply hit the clutch and brakes and let myself slowly back down going forward out of the brush on a very steep slope. I am also amazed how much traction and what a steep slope can be climbed in 4wd in reverse.
