Nice work! Having a concrete floor in place makes construction easier as you have a sturdy floor for ladders, scaffolding or lifts. I put my floor in almost last, and it would have been much easier had I put it in earlier.

Pretty much standard practice here. Slab cost me $16,200. All reinforced with deep piers etc

That will definitely slow down the white ants and mice! Looks really nice.

All the best,

Peter

My barn has progressed to the stage where sheeting is next. I also plan to put a hoist in the middle bay .

Looks awesome! What company? I love that style but save a bit of money doing clear span. I got an updated quote... Holy hell. 55k for the building itself and I can't imagine concrete will be any less than about 11 per sq foot. So I'm going to have to find another company or downsize. I got a quote from cleary as well, 140k installed with concrete floor. For a gd old school wood post pole barn. Nothing fancy. Holy hell.

I am now thinking I'll just do something like 40x30 and then build some loafing shed style covered storage behind it or something as I find deals on lumber or steel. Even for a 40x60 pole building kit it's looking like 45k.

It is all bolted together. There are plenty of designs and companies to choose from here and most use Bluescope steel. I used a builder recommended by a friend. (Acacia Sheds and Awnings) It will be vermin proof. The complete kit with controller doors and windows and one ranchslider door and a personal door was around $34,000 + $7,500 to erect + slab. ($16,200) It is engineered to high wind conditions. No snow here.

Short video. It was a bit windy so I didn't go as high as I wanted to.

dang, if someone gave me those prices, in USD I would tell them to come and do it straight away! I think its funny how the aussies call that an "american style barn"

did not see your location in the first post. I worked for 2 years out by the Queensland/SA corner. Moomba, and got to know the crew at the Innamincka pub quite well. I still cant believe they are actually paving the Strez.

my wind load is 135 mph 217 kph and snow is 55 lb/sqfoot. 260 kg/sqm so we do have some tough conditions at my location on the last foothill below the rocky mountains. wind is blowing about 50 mph or 80 kph today and that's sort of normal. plus 110 f to -30f temps.

I hear they have high constant winds in Texas too. We don't get much wind here at all really but they have to design for the worst.
Average wind when we get it is 15 - 25 kph. As seen in the video, we are surrounded by trees and the range to the west protects us a lot.
As for the barn design, I wanted something with a bit of character, not just a everyday shed. Also the high center gives me room for a hoist. ( x mechanic ) I have 3 vehicles to service + my tractor etc.
As far as prices, Take off 1/3 of that to be on par with the US$. We have had a number of price increases with steel but I beat the last one. Never had a frost where I am but it does get pretty hot at times.
I should have mentioned the size. It is 15 meters across the front and 12 meters deep. About 50 ft x 40 ft.

Slowly getting there. Builders could only spend a half day today but will be back tomorrow.
There are some pics on my other website blog for those interested. HERE

i ended up going with a lester pole barn, a local company is putting up the shell and I will finish. they could do it about 6 months faster than any steel building and its a good local company that a neighbor recommended. 36x40 with a porch that will turn into a green house. should be built in march. 12 tall walls with 12 wide and 10 tall doors.

thanks for the input. the increase in costs made me reduce the size quite a bit.

I am reading down thru this thread and was going to hold my opinion in regards to your original cost estimate until I'd read everything. Glad I waited. I knew you were 50% low.

Even with these prices you've receive you still have to finish it inside.

For an all weather building you need to estimate $55 per sqft. And that's if you do a LOT of the finish inside work yourself.

Also going to mention, your original building size was wayyyyyyy too small for the wish list things you planned to do in it.

Good luck!!!

Yeah, you are going to have to adjust your wishes dramatically. You cut 1,000 sqft off the size.

You won't be able to back a concrete truck inside to do your floor. So the building needs to be framed then stop. Then get the concrete guys in to pour the floor. Then bring the builders back to finish the building.

If you plan on water inside you will have to do that after they've set their poles and before concrete as well.

The buried electrical can come up the outside of the building and be done after the builders are done.

My final strong suggestion concerns the pad. Build it right. Before construction starts. Get it flat. Proper drainage all the way around.

There's a LOT of coordination that needs to happen. And remember, your builder don't give a crap about any of the things I mentioned above. All he wants to do is stick a building together and get paid.

we want to build a workshop. I am thinking about 60 x 40. want a steel building for good bay height in the center, but keeping it lower overall to lower its visual impact on the property. It will be placed a few hundred feet in front of our home on a narrow, long 5 acre plot. we will store a 18to20 foot boat, tractor, a toy car or 2 or 3 in the hopefully distant future when I get the collection from my father. I also am a bit of a wood worker/fabricator/etc. and would like dedicated shop space for building things or pulling in a car to work on, etc. so a mechanics bay and wood shop space. thinking about this, 3 20 ft. wide 40 ft. long spaces. far side is boat and tractor storage. middle is maybe the slide in truck camper in the back sharing space in the far side with the boat and lift/mechanic space in the front. next bay is wood shop in the back and car storage in the front. also thinking of cutting the size down on the width to 50. 3 16.5 ft. bays should still get me plenty of space for 2 cars in the back of a bay and one in the front, as cars are generally around 6.5 ish feet wide, at least anything i want to keep long term. i have a bit of reference as my dad has a barn with the collection in it, but I'm trying to think long term. we are young and I only want to do this once. I am really only dead set on it being a steel building, keeping the peak height lower and having 2 ft. over hangs with gutters for longevity of the cladding and water management around the foundation. it will be insulated and heated. I am also keeping it a bit lower to lower the interior volume for heating costs. the back of one bay will probably have a room dedicated to a battery storage system for a future ground mount solar system. also considering some kind or bridge or cantilever hoist inside, and solar on the roof instead of ground mount. likely will have the main panel in the barn and the house running off a subpanel with a big breaker next to that. meter is on a pole in front of the house, so that should not be a huge issue with co-op.

what am I missing? besides about another 50k! haha. plan on raising the building myself. my father has built a few pole barns and the steel building guy says its easy if you have any skill at all. ill get the concrete done by someone else. bro in law is an electrician and does commercial stuff, so should be good there, he will also be using the space. what is on your "should have" list. everyone says go bigger bigger bigger, but i really am quite good at keeping the number of things to store at a constant level, save for inheriting some old iron and a wood boat, but planning for that now.

another idea is to cut the width 10 feet and add 10 feet lean to on the side outside covered storage. this would be fine for the truck camper, implements, etc. not sure on cost difference though and if its not much, i would just have enclosed space.

a 16 x 40 space should store 4 cars a bit tight. with some length left over. 20x40 would be a lot of space in-between.

My barn is 60x40. You have a lot going on for that size of building.

yea, I know. I have one 40 ft hi cube that we will keep. it's what the budget can handle. I'm not going to finance this. enough of a payment on the house/land.

this builder did a very nice job on a neighbors place. i am having them do the concrete as well. I will stub the utilities. should be getting some structural fill next week to level the pad.

Be sure to come back and update us as this moves along. Methodically think thru this. Never let a contractor push you when you aren't ready.

Understand that you are going to approve procedures that you will later regret. That's part of it. Someone that says they would rebuild exactly as they did the first time is not telling the truth. We all wish we had "done things different". :)

Just try to minimize that list. :)
